You work the door of a nightclub. You hold the list. You make the call. Everyone has a story: "My name should be on there." "They're waiting for me inside." "Just take one look." Some are honest. Some doctored their ID. Some try to slip a folded bill into your pocket. Your checks are limited: ID, guest list, sobriety, pat-down, past record. Compare the ID to the person — does the name match, is the birth year off, is the laminate lifting at the corner? Pick the wrong row and the fake walks right past you. Then decide: Let In, VIP Table, Reject, or Call the Police. Good calls grow your reputation and your cut.
