It is free, it asks you which plan but you can exit out and use most the features without paying for something. Maybe colors, easy to use pen with. You can make books specifically for each subject. Voice notes, links, it’s overall a great option for the average person who just wants to write notes on your tablet or phone.

It has been one of the best apps I’ve used for my productivity.
What happened?
I’ve enjoyed using Notability for years until the most recent Cloud migration. My planner is no longer functioning. It lags so bad that it barely opens. Tech support is slow and offers the most basic/pointless tips. Not good.
Best note taking software and more
I use this at conferences to take notes. I can load the pdf of the presentation and can then underline and highlight, just like I was doing it on paper. Yes, I’m old enough that I grew up taking paper notes.
New updates in the past few months are annoying
Please for the love of god, change back the 1.0 spacing to what it was previously. Now, when I type notes on powerpoint slides I’ve imported, the amount of space that gets taken up is way too much because the space between text lines is too wide. I’m having to make the font size smaller to try and accommodate, which makes it more difficult for me to read once I export the file and print. Also, please stop hyperlinking dates and times. I submit a calendar for work and color-code days/times based on availability, and I’m unable to color-code when all of the text keeps turning blue. Lastly, the developers use a sly tactic in regards to app reviews. When you’re in Notability and go to rate the app, a pop-up shows up allowing you to select “Needs work” or “Love it.” Selecting “needs work” takes you to providing email feedback while selecting “love it” takes you to the App Store to provide a good rating.

Used to be better
Every time I open it now there is some new screen wanting me to “upgrade” to some “AI” this or that. It’s great for taking notes on an iPad. It’s terrible for trying to paste in relevant text blocks, it’s not great for trying to sketch something in your “notebook” - it’s great at taking notes. I wish they’d continue to just focus on that functionality and quit with the extras stuff.

App-Ruining Update
Recent update completely ruined experience for users who relied on a completely empty page where you could fit plenty of text, hand writing, and images with complete freedom. Recent update added margins that you cannot remove, taking up a portion of the page when trying to type onto a note not using a text box. They also just removed text-wrapping, a function that was necessary in my note taking. Now you cant have images next to text on a page without pushing the text down below the bottom of the image, even if there is half of the right side of the page wide open for an image to be placed. The app functions closer to Google Docs than a reliable sandbox notetaking app now. On top of all of this, since this update I have noticed extreme laggy loading times for actions as simple as typing - god forbid you try to select all and edit 5+ pages of notes. Expect up to 10 second of a frozen screen or your note temporarily turning blank forcing you to zoom out or move the screen until your command is carried out. This has made quick formatting, editing and smooth typing impossible. I used to love and rely on this app, suggesting it to anyone who asked, but now I may be forced to move to a different note taking app. Why would an app release an update that makes the app clearly worse? Did none of the developers bother to test it? Why remove features that made them stand out from their competition? Why does it run so much slower - I feel like I am on my family desktop from 2007. Look any of these complaints up, they are widespread online. The 4.8 rating is outdated. I would LOVE to change my rating back to 5 stars if they simply go back to the way the app was a year ago, no update necessary.

Wish is could reply like Livescribe
I need to often times playback 2-3 hour long meetings for typing up note-minutes for a group of 10 managers including some action points and general policy changes. This information goes out to 125 employees. I need to replay often to get exactly what was dertmined and the playback feature should have a much bigger/longer slide bar to pinpoint various points in the conversation AND in the pdf notes where something was said. Much was thought out well in programming ofNotability but on this playback feature, I’d rather use the old fashioned pen and playback that comes with Livescribe!

Update ruined it :(
I loved this app and used it often for years as a student and a teacher for the ease of airdropping PDF’s. Now when I try to airdrop between iPad and MacBook, it only will airdrop the web address and ask me to log in. This does not work for connecting work and personal accounts and renders the app useless. It seems I should be able to export to documents then send, but why ruin this feature and make it extra steps and muck up my documents folder?

Just use a different app
I pay for it and it doesn’t work, lecture notes fail to load as well as quizzes, contacting support is slow and they don’t have any resolutions

Thanks for forcing me into a paid subscription after I originally paid for the app years prior. Goes to show you don’t own anything you buy anymore because they can rug pull you and force to you pay a subscription.
All notes lost after “migrating” to notability cloud
I have been using this app for ~5 years and, despite having issues every time there’s a bigger update, it has been fine. Until today all my notes become blank after it tells me to update and migrate my notes to notability cloud. Maybe I should just go back to pen and paper. This is insane. INSANE!

It’s incredibly frustrating—either the app deletes my paid PDF, or it runs painfully slowly, undermining all its other benefits.

I have been using this app for over 6 years now and I get AT LEAST 3 crashes or freezes a day. I’m running this on an M3 chip. This is unacceptable and your development team should be ashamed. Update: you are now forcing me to use notability cloud to sync instead of the iCloud sync I’ve relied on. I’m moving to goodnotes.

AI FEATURE UPGRADE REQUESTED
I love Notability AI and find it incredibly helpful! One feature I’d really love to see is a separate AI study tool where we can upload documents/PDFs and have it generate practice questions based on the concepts, or simply give it a topic and have it create a full set of questions. It would be even better if it could generate these as PDFs, along with helpful visuals like charts, diagrams, and flowcharts. The generation of PDF and images from a note specific AI would be great too!! This would make Notability an amazing all-in-one study tool! Please add this!!
