UPDATE — The app needs to be much more clear. Bluetooth indeed is fully turned on, and is working perfectly. However, iOS apparently has a setting where you have to permit apps access to Bluetooth on a one-by-one basis. The app should make that much more clear. That is, we had to turn on the setting for this specific app, even though I was turned on for all other devices. And after we did so, no more error message.

We have tried rebooting the app, rebooting the iPhone, and many other things, but the app still does not work, because each time it incorrectly reports that Bluetooth is turned off, which is completely mistaken. Every other device works with Bluetooth, so the app has no idea what it’s talking about.

Will not unlock bin when I am right next to it
Bluetooth and location services enabled. Tried reinstalling. iphone 12 mini

So convenient. Only one time, on a Sunday afternoon, has it not worked for me. Otherwise it’s always available.

Good concept, bad execution
Composted before moving to the city, so naturally loved the idea but the app’s gps is not up to snuff. Several times bins refuse to open because Im not “close enough” to the bin while my phone rests on top of it
First time
Terrible! I was excited to try this, gathered my compostables and headed to the bin but after I got there it said “out of service” so then I just put everything in the corner trash can. What a joke and what a waste of my time. Like many other Mayor Adams ideas-lots of hype then no delivery :(
Perfectly simple
I love this app so much! Simple, clean design. Well thought out. It does exactly what it says it will do — helps you discard your compost safely and easily. xo

I love having all time access to the compost bins, and really hope this program is a success!! Having an app to unlock the boxes is a good idea, and when my box was full, I liked that the app pointed me to a nearby option. But you know what would be even more awesome? A WATCH option. When I run out of the house with a sack of near rotting garbage, I’d love to not have to bring, or pull out and manipulate, my phone.

sometimes I go to subway and buy a sandwich and then put the whole sandwich in one of these bins because they’re so fun to use
Love composting but bin design is bad
Love the composting app and the plentiful bins near me. I have no issues with the app. But the mouth of the bin is quite small to fit even a modest bag of compost in it. I usually have to shove it in, likely tearing the bag on the way in. But overall very happy with this new feature in my life.
Good app, need an Android version asap
Seems to work well on Apple. But you need to creat an Android version asap. There are more Android phones out there.
Great app and great idea!
This composting idea is perfect for families living in nyc! I was so excited when I saw the new bin on the corner of the block. The app also works great and has not failed once so far. It’s definitely recommended!
Works as it should and feels good to use it
I used to drop my food scraps off every Friday at the green market but this system is even more convenient. It’s easy to find an empty compost site and open it. A few tips - Use the foot pedal, and remember to remove fruit stickers. 🌎

It worked!
I’ve been composting at the greenmarkets, thanks to GrowNYC. Attempted to use the app before without success. Today it worked! Great to have a 24/7 option.
Easy as 1..2…3
So. Easy. I scanned. It opened. I put in my whole compostable salad bowl and utensils. Incredible to know that they won’t be sitting in some landfill for years! NYC is cleaning up!!
