Won’t open

Tried downloading but trying to open it it crashes and won’t open, what we doing wrong.

Response from developer

Hey there, What bad luck! You downloaded v4.0.1 which had a serious bug in it. You’ll find the current version all fixed and much more to your liking. I’m afraid sometimes bugs get through, especially for apps made in one person’s free time. I got this one squashed very quickly thanks to lots of helpful users who emailed me. You can always report problems to support@octoscope.app.

Pointless

This app is ok I guess, but I really could not find a point to it. I had hoped it world be able to give a clear indication as to which tariff would be cheaper for me, but the information it provides is too basic to be useful - disappointingly there is no accounting for shifting load to a different tariff’s cheaper times so the advice it gives is useless.

Response from developer

Hi there, thank you for your feedback. I understand that load shift prediction during tariff comparison is important to you, and that specific feature is something I’ve deliberately not built in Octoscope. I understand you’ve bounced off the app, and hope you’ve found another tool for this job. If you’re interested to understand why, please read on. As a developer, I could analyse electricity patterns and make a good guess at categorising usage (e.g. EV charging, washing, cooking etc). I could then make assumptions about load shift potential and predict what a new tariff may cost a user, were they to make specific load shifting adjustments. I understand this is the feature you’re looking for. The problem for me is that requires a bunch of technological and lifestyle assumptions that would be wrong a lot of the time. The last thing I want is to encourage a tariff switch based on a modelled cost that may not be achievable in practice: that’s bad financial advice. Only my users know how much load they can really shift, so Octoscope answers a limited but precise question: “what would this tariff have cost you, based on how you actually used energy?” Rob

Beautifully crafted

A case study in how to present information with maximum clarity and appeal.

App Doesn’t Work

I’ve had the app for 3 days now and connected the API. The data isn’t loading from my account and the API call is timing out.

Response from developer

Hi there, I can re-assure you the app does work, as hundreds of happy daily users can attest! If you’re having repeated issues, contact me via in-app support and we’ll get it sorted. Remember to check your network and report the errors Octoscope is showing you - Octoscope will never tell you there’s a timeout, it will always give you something more helpful. Thanks, Rob.

Can’t connect with my API

Turned out to be my fault in copy and paste. All now working fine and getting to grips with the various functions. Thanks to Rob for a very prompt response to my previous review.

Response from developer

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble connecting. If you'd like support with your issue please drop me a line at support@octoscope.app and we can get to the bottom of it & get you connected. All the best, Rob Developer

Ripoff of Octopus Watch

Octoscope is such an obvious copycat of Octopus Watch that I'm surprised Apple doesn't remove it. Octoscope is just ugly, over-full, and clearly here to confuse. The most annoying thing? The need to subscribe to access features that is constantly thrown in your face. You can see the slider to find the best slot but once you want to use the feature you get a pop-up window that you need to subscribe... Octopus Watch has a base app for just £2 that offers 90% of the features of Octoscope! Yeah, nope.

Response from developer

Hi there! Thanks for your review, I’m sorry to hear you feel this is a copy of Octopus Watch. I’d like to explain the positioning of the two apps and hopefully I can help you see the ecosystem in a more positive light. First up, this is not a “copycat” of Octopus Watch. Both are mature apps in a competitive ecosystem that includes many others. As with any crowded market, you’ll find similar features across multiple apps. This is normal software development. Octoscope and Octopus Watch adopt radically different designs and appeal to different users. You’re right to call out that Octoscope and Octopus Watch have different business models. I am proud that Octoscope is a freemium app. I never bombard users with requests to pay. Users see the paywall once during onboarding and later only if they try to access Pro features. The vast majority of users get great features without paying me a thing. In contrast, Octopus Watch has a price of entry that will discourage many. I understand you prefer paymium apps over freemium ones, and I respect your willingness to pay app developers for their work, but that does not mean Octoscope is a poor choice for other folks. You’re absolutely right you need a subscription to use Octoscope’s “slot finder” tools. Different apps will restrict different features. On the flip side, Octoscope users get carbon intensity data and daily breakdowns for free (both are subscription features in Octopus Watch). This is another form of choice for users - a good thing. You’ve called Octoscope a copycat but take issue with a difference in feature restrictions. Alas, we cannot have our cake and eat it. These apps exist in a competitive space. They are different and offer choice. That is good for users.

Fantastic

I discovered Octoscope a few months ago and it has shown just how much energy I’m getting from my solar panels. That means I can calculate a payback time for any future investment in solar. And I will, these figures make it a no brainier for us.
The tracker price page also allows us to stagger our use for the best price power. i.e. laundry, grass cutting…

Thank you for creating this app Robert.

Hi there! Thank you so much for your review. I hope you enjoy the export data overhaul in version 3.0. This should let you get even more from your solar data. Cheers, Rob.

Brilliant

An app that stands head and shoulders above the crowd. Well worth giving the free trial a go to try the extra features. I particularly like seeing the dynamic Agile price as a complication on my Apple Watch. Happy with the subscription when it kicks in for 12 months next week.

Amazing app

Had a bug on multiple accounts under 1 signin and developer contacted me on NYE 2023 and told me it would be fixed and presto fixed on 2/1/24.

All functionality I use and definitely worth the subscription.

Definitely would like to see comparison against other tariffs as a main menu instead of a sub menu.

Definitely would recommend

Fails to load.

This application fails to load on my iPad Pro or iPhone 15 Pro. Developer website seems to be static and not maintained. Disappointed.

The operation couldn't be completed. (Octoscope.CarbonIntesityErrors error 2.)
