Useless unless you pay

Doesn’t allow you to do ANYTHING unless you pay.

Waste of time

They make you pay for safety!!

I was hoping to use this app to track some wildfires that are actively in progress in my area as onX was the first app to pop up when I was trying to find this information. But onX has decided to lock this very useful safety feature behind a paywall.

Nice to know that this company values money more than people’s safety.

Useless when offline

I downloaded a HUGE area in low quality for offline map use. I mapped to my destination and it took me an hour deeper into the national forest than I wanted to go, then it wouldn’t let me reroute anywhere at all. I would select a spot, click “navigate” and nothing would happen. Then I closed the app and kept trying and although the button worked, it kept giving error messages (I don’t remember what they said, now) — it wouldn’t gps me anywhere at all even though I was well within the offline map I downloaded

Not worth it.

So many mistakes on names of lakes in my area actually dangerous for new comers to use in an emergency.

Response from developer

We'd love to hear more about this so we can make the necessary updates to our maps. Can you contact our support team at Help@onxmaps.com with more details surrounding the missing lakes (coordinates, lake names, etc.) so we can look into this?

Trails are not matching MVUM’s.

You guys have so much terrain and trails marked as closed in my neighborhood it is a little ridiculous. Roads to trailheads with pit toilets marked as closed. Clearly marked through routes shown as closed. COUNTY ROADS shown as closed. But not being able to keep up with the FREE MVUM’s is just sloppy work. If my dad didn’t want to know the name of the property owners of every ranch in eastern M, I would delete it. As far as off roading goes, it’s useless. You will miss more than half of the trails.

Extremely limited features

Without getting their paid memberships its basically just google maps i actually think i would get more info on google and maps than using this app

PERFECT APP

I don’t have a single piece of constructive criticism on this. I love it so much. Even though I’m using the off road version I find myself using the property ownership feature probably the most. I do a lot of rockhounding on the river so I like to use the trails to get there and the property feature to make sure I’m legal where I’m at. I recently had an issue (pretty sure it was my phone and not the app) and Kendall helped me fix it in literally 2 minutes. I’m a Montanan and fully support this Montana company. You guys killed it on this!

You HAVE to buy premium

The title explains it. You can’t do literally anything without paying. And the worst part is instead of just paying for the app it’s all joo ish so it’s just a monthly charge.

Great app, just expensive

This app is amazing, I had a free trial I used on my trip to Utah. The only issue I have is price. My family does quite a bit of off-roading throughout the year, but not on a weekly basis like some people. Because the app is subscription based, it makes it expensive for normal or even semi-regular users. It would be a hassle to cancel and then upgrade your subscription every time you want to go trailing. I wish they had a permanent payment option, or at least make the subscription cheaper or making the free tier better.

Saved My Knife!

I’ve had my Benchmade Elishewitz knife for 36 years. I was out mushrooming and left it on the ground. Luckily I had waypointed that spot and OnX took me right to it the next day.

Cant cancel

For you to just cancel your subscription you gotta download a whole different app. Tried calling to cancel and I thought I did got charged anyway. Quite frustrated and disappointed.
App itself does work good though

Don’t waste your money

Glitchey app. Trails only show up some of the time, other times you click it and it only shows national
Forest. App worked perfectly fine then started glitching and will not fix itself. I contacted customer service and got a AI. Glad I figured this out before I was on the trails. Do not recommend this app to anyone especially for the price and AI customer service.

You broke something

Not sure what this last update did, but it’s about 40 degrees off in landscape mode. Portrait mode it functions fine, rotate to landscape mode and it doesn’t know which way it’s pointing. Have this on 3 different devices and they all behave this way, when before this was never an issue. Please fix.

Charged for just downloading

I watched an add for this app. I installed it, noticed it was subscription based. So I uninstalled it. Noticed I was charged for simply downloading and deleting it. I’ll be disputing this.

Being charged after cancellation.

I cancelled this subscription during the trial and just today I was attempted be charged by you guys. And it doesn’t show active statue in my subscription tab in the App Store. Could someone please rectify this?

Quickest cancellation ever

I purchased a premium subscription because the maps look a little nicer than Trails Off-road - but I cancelled my autorenewal just a few hours later.

The offline maps are nearly worthless. Instead of being state by state, you have to download tiny areas and piece them together.

The app is flooded with pop up tips that you can’t turn off. Go Away!

The trail reports are very limited, and on a computer, they remain stuck in a skinny sidebar where they are hard to read.

Scam

Does not work

Not at all a free app. Subscription beware

Saw this advertised on instagram as a great free map for camping. After lots of questions it’s only a free 5 day trail and subscription is required. Also it never says how much the subscription is. Do not download

Could be good, hampered by crashes and difficult route importing.

I’ve been using this app for back country adventure bike stuff and generally you download a GPX file for the route. You can import that all well and good but it can’t be directly used as a navigation route, if you try to it will give you directions to the start of the track and then always try to send you back to that. You need to manually trace the track to make a route and this is a very annoying process. If you phone happens to not have cell reception (who knew that would be common where people might be doing off-roading stuff) the app will crash while trying to do this tracing. It really needs to be a one button thing to convert a track to a route or just have it done in the background, being able to easily reverse the route would also be very helpful. Outside of that the app will just wig out at some point while you’re recording your track and you’ll lose several days worth of tracking, your best bet is to start and full stop the recording atleast once a day if not more just in case. Every time I use this app it’s frustrating and I feel like I don’t see it getting better (please provide actual change notes instead of the useless canned statement about making it better, maybe my problems were solved in an update but I’d never know it), I am unsure if I will bother renewing for another year. The one really positive thing was when I had the frustration with how to actually use this app for navigation is I called their support and got through to a real person in the US almost immediately.

Update: I used it this past weekend for a group motocamping trip, I manually built my route and then exported it to my friends but the way onX uses GPX files is apparently incompatible with their chosen apps. Also found a great bug where if you are recording a track, when you are also using the app to navigate a route and you want to mount your phone in landscape the app will think you’re driving sideways constantly and not orient the map correctly, this persisted through a phone reboot. One other observation is that the app decides it needs to calculate elevation and or some other piece of information every time you tap on it so getting navigation started on a route takes a few minutes of it being mostly frozen before it suddenly kicks on. I am actively looking for a replacement before an off-road rally next week.
