Not so trivial

Transitioning from the meet up platform to the app temporarily lost me as a member of the group. Not so trivial to use at all, have to dig in to find the information, reminders/updates not coming through… I definitely have to work extra to stay connected. Meetup worked better for me.

Too Much Unnecessary Information

The app isn’t easy to use. Even with the updates the first thing users see are activities happening in states we don’t live in.
Recommendations and Featured Content should be on secondary pages, not taking up three-fourths of the Home page.
If the purpose of the app is for the Black community to gather together, why aren’t all upcoming events visible on the Home page and in calendar order? Why do we need to hunt for them? Also, is anyone tracking event attendance since the creation of the app? It’s so difficult to use that we’ve seen a decline in scheduling/attendance in our area.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback. Can you make sure your app is on the latest version? You should see an option to exit the internal post-trip survey that the app asks users to complete. If you're still havin an issue, can you reach out to our team at sf@outdoorafro.org? We'd love to help! Please note that the review/feedback the app was asking for is not public but internal. Thank you!

After Hike Survey

Please include an option to opt out of an event survey. There’s no button to close the survey. These should not be mandatory.

App isn’t User Friendly

Finding and connecting with other outdoor Black people has been just as difficult as it’s always been since Outdoor Afro left Meetup. Their new app isn’t user friendly and very few events are hosted. There’s just a bunch of information about things you can do, which doesn’t help you meet other Black people.

Fantastic!

This app has made my work as a volunteer so much more effective!!!

Question

Ik this is probably a stupid question and the answer is obvious but is this app just for the black community or can other people join (no hate genuinely wondering🫠)

Response from developer

Thank you for your question! Outdoor Afro is for everyone. Please feel free to participate in any events that catch your attention.

Vendor Application

Very Easy

Go back to Meetup

Hate to say it but this app is not user friendly; I much preferred the Meet up experience. Perhaps this app just needs to be redesigned.

🌳✨ Outdoor Afro Magic: A Weekend to Remember! ✨🌳

🌳✨ Outdoor Afro Magic:

We had a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful time at the Outdoor Adventure Camping Event — truly unforgettable! 🏕️💫

We met amazing people 🧡, laughed till our cheeks hurt 😂, and slept under the stars ✨. A curious raccoon even came by to “borrow” our marshmallows 🦝🔥 — talk about nature joining the fun!

The space was filled with beauty, joy, and community — from the cooking and washing stations 🍳🪣 to the shared meals and stories that filled the air. 🌾🍲

Canoeing on the water 🚣🏽‍♀️, stargazing at night 🌌, and feeling completely safe, seen, and connected — it was magnificent.

To everyone who showed up with laughter, light, and love — thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! 🙏🏾💛

My first camping trip of many — and my heart is full. 🌻 #OutdoorAfro #BlackJoyOutside #CommunityHealing #NatureIsHome

Needs Work

If this app is supposed to replace the Meet Up app it’s really falling short. This app is causing me to lose interest in Outdoor Afro activities and just link up with the friends I’ve made in the community.

1. I live in NC, there’s no reason I should open the app and see activities in California, Baltimore, and Florida. Their needs to be chapters just like on the meet up app.

2. I can’t see who’s coming. Sometimes that’s the determining factor on if I sign up or not. I recently went to an outdoor Afro meet up, only to find our leader was the only familiar face. It made me feel like everyone else has left the group for the same issues I’m having.

They definitely jumped the gun too soon on mandating this app.

Gratitudes

So grateful for this organization and the volunteer leaders who get us outside in community. The app is an exciting offering and am looking forward to improvements. As of now, i miss the ease of use with meetup, the sense of community and transparency with knowing who was going to be attending an event, photosharing, and messaging with ease. While joining múltiple chapter meetups/FB groups was cumbersome, it organized the locations easily and allowed easier search for activities and leaders. Would love the option to have to app organized by chapter, even as an opt in/out personlization. In app payment or links from app is definitely needed. Mine keeps defaulting to a region/city I do not live in and I have been unable to message leaders except when going through an event they are leading. Will use help function to sort this out if possible.

Nice app.

I would love to see the following updates:
1. To be able to see who is registered for each event. You know we have to know “Who all gone be there?” Very important.
2. Option to view in dark mode would be easier on the eyes.
3. Actual photos of each event.

Glad that this app exists

Being able to build community while either at home or on the move is so wonderful. Being able to follow leaders and get notifications when they are hosting events is very helpful to know when there are things happenings near me.

No Notifications

While I am so proud of this app, I miss the Meetup app notifications when new events in my area were posted. This app doesn’t do that so you more than likely you’ll be waitlisted and/or miss an event altogether. I also do not get any notifications when I move from waitlist to attending… and there is no calendar syncing with this app either. It’s a bit of a mess. I hope this can be fixed so that the app is useful otherwise I’d highly suggest moving back to meetup.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback, The system does send push notifications when leaders you follow post a trip. You also have the option to add the event to your calendar after signing up. Regarding the waitlist notification, we will take it into consideration for future releases. If you have any other feedback, please submit it through the app and our team will be more than happy to help! Thank you!

Stuck

The app gets stuck on the description section and won’t let me scroll to the bottom of my post to edit.

Response from developer

Hi, can you submit a support ticket or reach out to our team at sf@outdoorafro.org?

This App FORCES Participants to Leave Reviews

This app forces you to leave a review after you’ve attended an event. You’re unable to see or sign up to future events unless you leave a review regarding the last event you attended. The choices given during the review process also may not reflect your actual experience.
Outdoor Afro should count themselves lucky that they’re not charging for an actual product, or the FTC would be all over them for forcing participants to leave reviews that may be misleading.

Great App

One thing I appreciate about this app that most other outdoor apps lack in is the ability to build community around the outdoors.

I can follow outdoor leaders in my area, visit the vetted spots they have recommended, and join them on trips!

Amazing effort!

Amazing that this organization put the effort in to create an app to better connect with community!! I’m so excited to engage with it and to see a community-based organization pour into themselves this way … especially in the age of tech monopolies and non-consensual data predation from big companies...
While the app is in its early stages, it is an awesome tool and will only evolve to include more seamless features and integration.

Loving the Flexibility

I love how I can view so many different options on the app. I know this is the first version, can’t wait to see how it progresses.

Best way to find community outside

The new Outdoor Afro app is amazing! Easy to use and convenient to find something to do this weekend!
