Has promise

It’s a fun and cute and a little bit addictive app (this is a good thing in a learning app) but not really there yet. A bit amateur and sloppy and I suspect very AI influenced. . It’s not always intuitive how sections work. It adds erroneous words like people’s names and letter pronunciations to its flip cards. It isolates phrases for the listener to repeat but often includes the last word from the previous sentence. I definitely feel like it’s on the right track, but I don’t have time for all these errors right now. If I was learning just for fun I might try longer, but I don’t so I am switching to another app.

Edit: to people complaining about it costing money—seriously? Are you providing free apps? Sure that would be nice but I do not expect people to work for free. Also, it’s very easy to cancel during the trial week. Just go to your Apple subscriptions. If you missed that you have just seven days free, that’s on you.

It’s good but one tiny flaw

When I am learning words it has me tap them and it adds them to “known” words. Only hearing something once doesn’t count it as known in my book. I need to be able to say it and know what it is just as easily as hola, por favor, or gracias for it to be known. I have to remove those words to “learning” but have no clear way to relearn them without having go through the lesson again where it forces me to put them to known again. That needs addressing. Please look into that. Also this app needs a widget. It doesn’t have one.

Great Concept - Poor Execution

I was excited to start using Parrot because I love the idea of tools that it adds on top of other popular Spanish immersion apps (e.g. D.S). Unfortunately, the app has been unreliable for me and the quality of content is not as high as other apps.

My biggest complaint is that key features in the app oftentimes just randomly won’t work. I often have to highlight phrases multiple times before the app will translate them. The typical response is that it just says “Parroting” and won’t give a translation. It eventually does work if I try multiple times on the same phrase, but that’s frustrating. Besides that, flashcards are glitchy sometimes, and I have also had individual videos that would not play.

Less important, but still worth mentioning, is that the quality of a lot of the videos is pretty mid. I’m on about the 12th lesson, and I find many of the videos to be unengaging. The writing / storylines are uninteresting, the acting is poor, and the sound quality is amateurish.

Parrot has the core for a great app. It’s just not there yet.
