Pilot Magazine User Reviews

Top reviews

An excellent App.

I used to buy every paper issue and read cover to cover including adds. For a while I found the online versions glitchy but now everything works well. The in depth reports are wonderful. I don’t fly myself, could never afford to, but imagining is fine.

No access

Since the latest update I cannot access any editions. If I tap Restore Purchases it doesn’t do that and keeps asking for a log in which doesn’t work either. Still takes my money every month though.

Response from developer

We are really sorry to hear you have experienced these problems with the latest update to the app. If you can please contact us at digitalsubscriptions@archant.co.uk with details of your subscription, we will get this resolved for you asap.

Do not buy if you want one issue only

The app misleadingly indicates you can buy one issue. In fact you are purchasing an ongoing, monthly subscription- not a single issue. This practice must be stopped. It is misleading and unscrupulous

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear you have experienced problems with our app. We offer a range of duration based subscriptions within the app and have previously also offered one off single issue purchases. Whilst the duration based subscriptions are recurring, they represent better value for money then the one off single issue purchases, as they grant you full access to all editions within the app and are considerably cheaper than purchasing a single edition. If you have taken out a subscription that has renewed automatically when you did not wish it to do so, you should be able to receive a refund for this payment by contacting Apple's support team.

Downloads don’t work

I spend my working life in airliners so I thought I could read downloaded publications whilst in the air. Wrong! You have to have an internet connection before the app will function. I’ve raised this with Archant and “they’re looking into it”. Well it’s been like it for 12 months of my subscription with no cure so I won’t be bothering to renew. Such a shame as the internet connection only seems to be necessary to subject you to some adverts about subscribing to other magazines.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback. We are currently working on a big project to move the app onto a new and improved platform, bringing a host of great new features. At this point, the download authentication checks which have caused the problem you have experienced will be removed, allowing you to access downloads without first having to authenticate your subscriber status via an internet connection.

Very frustrating magazine app.

Today, as I often do on a busy day off, I have been dipping in an out of an article in Pilot magazine. If you allow the tablet to close, when you unlock it, you see the page you were on for 1 second, then it resets to the home page and you have to select the issue then scroll through to get back to where you were. Every bl**dy time! And scrolling through the pages, it usually interprets scrolling past an advert page as wanting to go to the advertiser's website. It is very, very annoying.

Authentication failed

I purchased a subscription but an error occurred during the purchase. iTunes Store charged me but I don't have access to the magazine. Daylight rubbery!

I contacted both iTunes and the magazine but they have not resolved the issue. I recommend a boycott of this online magazine until they sort themselves out.

Still not good enough

Despite the recent update is still dated, buggy and very poor. Why on earth does it not remember what page you were in when you go back in? Or even which issue you were reading? And why are the pages slightly too large for the screen in the standard view?

It's main competitor doesn't fail like this and I'll be sticking with the that in future. My subscription is about to expire and I won't be renewing. Such a shame the experience is so bad it discourages you from reading.

Latest App update

The latest update to Pilot app is absolute rubbish. All my previously downloaded editions will have to be downloaded again and with some of them even though it says they are downloaded, when I try to open them the app closes down and then when I open it again those editions say 'download' against them. Come on Argent, I've paid my subscription now give us a decent reading experience to enjoy the magazine. If I could give minus stars I would

Doesn't work

Simply does not load. Always thinks it is offline and never displays. Shame as the magazine is good.

Awful iPhone app

Awful iPhone app, not updated for 2 years, still got black bars across the top and bottom of the screen. Great magazine but appalling app. 1 star.

Just awful

Sorry guys, this is terrible. Never works, I saw the print edition had a review of the DA62 I wanted to read, didn't even appear in the app version. Or at least I couldn't find it. It's just rubbish!

Truly dreadful

Great paper magazine BUT this online version is diabolically bad. Why? It crashes more frequently than running normally, I'm not exaggerating; the usability is so poor that I've taken to pressing all buttons in sequence in the hope that one of them will do something as simple as allowing me read an edition; the ability to read offline is totally hit and miss. Won't be renewing my subscription. Apple, how could you possibly allow this rubbish to be sold on your store.

You don't own the issues you pay for

OK, so you can read the issues you've bought while your subscription is still running but, as soon as it expires you can't read any issues, even ones you've downloaded onto your iPad. (Yes, I've confirmed this with Archant by email).

Additionally, the graphics quality is quite poor: page edges don't align on double page spreads, and text and graphics elements of each spread have outlines around them where the compositing doesn't work properly.

If Airliner World can get this right (on both matters) why can't Pilot?

All in all, buy the print version (it's a good magazine), but steer clear of the app: it's rubbish.

ITorch

Mine makes a handy torch with its permanent white screen. Did anyone test this Pilot? Expected far better. Got excited. Then found out it was a fog day.

Poor reader app

To provide an ereader app without a book marking feature built in is frustrating and back to the stone age! Close the app or leave the app for a few days and you loose your page. When you resume, you have to search to find which page you were reading.

The app support desk tells you, politely, it has to be that way to work in their subscription system. No solution to the problem is offered.

Other magazines work with their apps to provide current page book marking, so the problem is not insurmountable.

Banner adds are part of free magazines, fine. When you pay for a subscription, you don't want to see flashing banner adds!

All in all, this is a poor app for such a great flying magazine!

Very Poor App for a good magazine

In addition to issues highlighted by other reviewers, individual issues cannot be bought, instead you have to sign up to an auto-renewing subscription then cancel it once you've downloaded the issue. Cancelling this subscription is not particularly straightforward. Ridiculous.

What is this?

Well I should have read the reviews better! By far the worst presented magazine I have purchased. What's with the half an icon for the magazine in the news stand? Poor quality photographs, don't bother enlarging them unless you like looking at pixels, and why don't you use the full width of the iPad display? Very poor attempt for the money and in view of the competition 1/10 for effort. In drastic need of an update and quality review. Want my money back!

Mr

Not great at all. I like the content, but the electronic version just lacks the readability and ease of use when compared to other magazines on the iPad.

Requires further preflight checks!

Oh dear. A truly poor execution of a magazine on iPad. Regular crashes (not landings you can walk away from), missing issues after repeated downloading, an archive facility that will not work, a ridiculously poor GUI (2 dimensional buttons which do not indicate if you have 'pushed' them or not) and this bizzare 'half magazine' thing going on on Newsstand. When the magazine eventually appears on your pad, it's slow to respond and lacks any interaction.

An overly complicated navigation system in the application ( if this were an aviation GPS we'd all be busting controlled airspace left right and centre) just frustrates - why oh why didn't somebody look at one of the alternatives for ideas on how a decent app works.

Having Bought a six month subscription I await an update almost on a daily basis - please sort this app out so we can read a good magazine...

Wait for the next version.....

Poor show

If the free sample is anything to go by don't bother. Why do publishers not realise that an A4 magazine just doesn't work on the iPad. Type has to be pinched and zoomed, the quality of images is rubbish....another one to add the app heap.
