About

Place turns any location into a rich, human-readable field report — instantly. Tap anywhere on the map, drop a pin, search by name, or use where you're standing right now. Place assembles terrain, geology, hydrology, land ownership, ecology, climate, and more into a clean, layered profile you can actually read in the field. UNDERSTAND ANY LOCATION Select a place and Place builds a complete picture: elevation and terrain shape, bedrock geology, watershed and stream network, land status and ownership, ecoregion, climate snapshot, and nearby species observations from iNaturalist. All from authoritative public data sources — USGS, NHDPlus, BLM, USFS, and more. GEOLOGY, IN DEPTH Read the bedrock formation beneath you in plain language, see the region's named rock layers stacked in order, and follow a synthesized "geologic story" of how the ground here came to be. Discover nearby named landforms and glaciers, and — from the Paleobiology Database — what lived here in deep time. BIODIVERSITY CONTEXT See modeled species richness for any point, broken out by birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles, with a switchable map overlay. LAND OWNERSHIP & PARCELS Know who owns the ground you're standing on — federal, state, tribal, or private — down to the tax parcel: owner, size, and parcel ID, plus a legal township/range description. See parcel boundaries as a map overlay, tap any parcel to identify it, and get an owner breakdown along every segment of a recorded route. GPS TRACKS Record your route with onX-style GPS tracking. Place logs your path in the background with the screen off, captures elevation and pace, and lets you export to GPX, KML, or GeoJSON. Import tracks from other apps. View your route on a topo map with an elevation profile. Free users get up to 3 saved tracks; Pro unlocks unlimited recording and import/export. MAP OVERLAYS Layer real data over the terrain: USGS topographic maps, BLM surface management, federal land boundaries, hunting and fishing districts, geology, biodiversity, property parcels, waterfalls and rapids, contour lines, hillshade, satellite imagery, and more — 36 specialty overlays in all. THEODOLITE AR Point your camera at a mountain and see its name, elevation, and distance projected live over the scene — with a 3D terrain wireframe mesh and a real-time instrument HUD showing your heading, pitch, and altitude. HUNTING & FISHING Montana hunters and anglers: tap any location and get land ownership, access status, and regulation context. View switchable hunting district overlays by species. Access the full Montana FWP regulation database. Pro + Montana add-on. SAVED PLACES & FIELD NOTES Save any location with a note, photo, sketch, and category glyph. Places sync privately across your devices via iCloud. Tap a saved place to pull a fresh report anytime. Share any report, place, or track as a free web link. SIRI & WIDGETS Ask Siri to open a saved place or report spoken field conditions. Live Activity shows your track stats on the Lock Screen while you hike. Home Screen widgets display recent places and track stats at a glance. APPLE WATCH Start and stop GPS track recording from your wrist. See recording status and elapsed distance on a watch complication. OFFLINE & RESILIENT Reports cache automatically so you can read them without signal. Offline grace keeps your Pro access and trial active when you're out of reach. PLACE PRO Unlock the full instrument: every report section, unlimited saved places and tracks, all 36 specialty map overlays, import/export, offline maps, Theodolite AR, PDF export, and full Apple Watch field workflows. Even on the free plan, one Pro report section is unlocked free every week. Try Pro free for 7 days, then $49.99/year or $5.99/month. Place is built for people who spend time outside and want to understand where they are — not just navigate through it. What's New in Place

1.0.2

July 22, 2026

Theodolite AR gets a full pass this build, and peaks across the Rockies finally know how big they really are. Sun & Moon — see where the sun and moon are right now, marked in the camera view and on the heading tape, along with today's sunrise and sunset bearings. Plan the light before you set up the shot. It's all computed on your device, so it works with no signal at all. Smarter Peak Identification — peaks in the bundled catalog now carry real topographic prominence, computed from USGS 3DEP elevation data. Labels favor the summit that genuinely towers over the valley instead of the nearest small bump that happened to be closest to the center of your view. Richer Peak Cards — prominence, mountain range and massif, and where a summit ranks among everything you can currently see. Save a peak as a Place, or jump straight to it on the map. Night Mode — a red instrument tint that protects your dark adaptation after sunset. Saved Places on the Horizon — bearings to your saved places and your active track start, marked right on the heading tape. Alignment That Remembers — skyline calibration is now saved per location, so returning to a familiar viewpoint opens already aligned instead of scanning the ridgeline all over again. Truer Labels — summit elevations are refined against high-resolution elevation data, and Earth curvature and atmospheric refraction are applied consistently, so distant labels sit on the ridge instead of floating above it. Steadier in the Field — the instrument now recovers cleanly from phone calls and app switches instead of leaving the terrain mesh frozen or turned the wrong way. If location or motion access is switched off, the app says so and takes you straight to Settings. Named Neighbors — an unnamed summit is now labeled with its height plus the distance and direction to the nearest major peak, so a nameless high point becomes something you can describe and find again. Capture fixes: your notes no longer carry over to the next photo, and a capture records the peak you actually aimed at rather than the last one you calibrated against.
