Great premise, execution could be improved

I love the idea of the app, but there are a few things that I think could do with improvement. The idea of a poker app similar to Duolingo is genuinely great, I downloaded it literally the first ad I saw for it, and the lessons genuinely are informative. I’m not a poker pro so I can’t exactly speak on the entire validity of the strategies presented in the app but in the online micro stakes games I’ve played these do work. However, there are a few things I think could be improved. For one, I think that being required to finish every lesson prior to the next mixed with the energy system just makes it kind of miserable for anyone choosing to use the free version of the app (especially if you did not pick the correct level), but I do understand that it pushes people to want to try the plus version so it makes sense. I think that doing away with one of these things for free users would retain a lot more people. Also just a little nitpicky but personally I find the speed at which the text shows up in a lesson is kind of annoying with how slow it is. Would be perfect if there was a setting where you could change the speed of the animation or disable the animation entirely and just have the text pop up.

Response from developer

Love that you gave us a shot off the first ad and that the lessons are holding up in real micro stakes games. Two tips that should help: you can test forward to skip past lessons you already know (big if you picked the wrong starting level), and tapping while the text is typing makes it appear instantly. The energy system feedback on free is fair and it's with the team. Keep building those skills.

New Interface Sucks

I loved using this app and was on a pretty long streak. But they updated the playing interface to have AI generated characters and look like a real table instead of the minimalistic cartoon setup they had going on. It’s so much harder to track what’s happening with the new interface, the UI is broken on my phone, and it overheats my phone now after like one puzzle for some reason. They did some kind of AI slop update to the app. Would love to have the old app back. Biggest problem is honestly my phone heating up I can’t use the app anymore.

Response from developer

Your phone overheating after one puzzle is not normal — that's a real performance problem, not a taste thing, and it's being worked on as part of a bigger rework. On the new table look: fair callout. We rebuilt it to feel more like a real table, but if it's harder to track the action, that defeats the point. We're a small team shipping updates every week — keep watching, and that streak will be worth restarting.

A++

I am learning so much and love the process. Highly recommended.

Very good; would recommend to anyone

Let me start this by saying that I was a complete fish before installing this app. I thought I knew about poker, but I didn’t. This app has so many specific scenarios, which gives you experience for real tables. The breakdowns are very detailed and do a very good job of explaining when to make a certain play and why. The terminology they use is techy, but not too niche that it becomes a foreign language. Overall, I would recommend this to literally anyone who is starting to become serious about Texas hold ‘em poker.

Response from developer

Thanks so much for sharing this! Really glad the scenarios and breakdowns are helping real-table decisions click. We built Poker Skill for exactly that jump from learning the terms to knowing what to do at the table. Keep building those skills.

Pretty good, uses AI art though.

The app is pretty much the Duolingo of poker. My only complaint is the avatar is AI generated which makes the app look cheap.

Response from developer

Really appreciate this. Duolingo of poker is the learning feel we are aiming for, and fair callout on the avatar looking cheap. The art should make Poker Skill feel more polished, not pull you out of it.

Confusing

I’ve played poker but wth are these questions they don’t explain anything properly like what do you mean rank and letter mean rank ect it’s genuinely insanity and make it more confusing then it needs to be

Response from developer

Yeah, if the wording makes basic poker terms feel more confusing, that is a real miss. Rank, suits, and card labels should be explained plainly, not like a puzzle before the lesson even starts.

Great app

Helps you learn in a straightforward and clean way.

Not free

I downloaded and paid for one month to see if I liked this trainer before committing to a longer subscription. After I canceled the subscription (which I always do immediately so I don’t forget) the app “couldn’t find my account” anymore. Definitely won’t be using this app ever again.

Response from developer

Hi there, thank you for flagging this as it's a bug and our team is absolutely on it. Please email us at support@pokerskill.com so we can help you further, and we're sorry to have given this first impression.

Small blind buttons

It is truly difficult to take a poker app seriously that makes the button the small blind. Get the free trail if you are learning basic poker but cancel after that. There are other apps, books or shows that are better to learn from

Great App

Love this app. Been telling everyone I know about it and I literally go on this everyday. Highly recommend.

There’s Daily puzzles aswell as a learning pathway. A leaderboard has also been introduced and you can now compete against friends.

Brilliant app and can’t wait for it to develop further

Response from developer

This made our day. Going in every day, telling people about it, and using both the learning path and daily puzzles is exactly the loop we hoped Poker Skill could create. Really glad the leaderboard is adding to it too. Thanks for helping push the app forward.

Has potential, needs time

There are too few lessons with more “coming soon” the only other thing you can do after that is puzzles. More lessons needed. Downloaded this off insta, but it should have more development before being advertised as a finished app.

Response from developer

You are not wrong. If the app feels finished in the ad but unfinished once you are in, we have more work to do. Appreciate you calling that out plainly.

Confused

The APP is good but it says you’ve finished all lessons, more lessons are coming soon - There’s no indication as to when these lessons are coming - Could somebody tell me please?

Response from developer

Glad the app is landing for you. Getting to "you've finished all lessons" and then being left hanging is not a great handoff from us. We need to be clearer about what is available now and what is still ahead. Appreciate the nudge.

Really fun and quick to learn

Been awesome doing the quick tutorials and have already learned quite a bit.

Response from developer

Really appreciate this. Glad the quick tutorials are clicking and that you've already learned quite a bit. That fast, approachable feel is exactly what we want from Poker Skill. Keep building those skills 🃏

Great app! When will new lessons drop?

This has really made learning poker easier and more fun. So much so I burned through all the available lessons in record time. When will more lessons be available?!?!?

Response from developer

This made our day. If you flew through the current lessons that fast, we need to pick up the pace. Really glad Poker Skill is making poker easier and more fun, and thanks for giving us the push.

Informational

Great simple and fun app to learn how to play poker!

Requires Payment Too Soon

Great game to learn how to play poker, but requires payment before you even finish the first lesson. Needs more interaction for free players.

Overall Great Learning Tool

Fantastic poker app; particularly for new players just learning the game. Smooth controls, familiar feel, and tons of potential. There are still challenging puzzles for more experienced players as well (which have SERIOUSLY improved since early development in recent updates). I’m really enjoying it so far and excited to see where it goes from here. Highly recommended.

Response from developer

This made our day. Hearing that Poker Skill works for newer players and still gives experienced players real spots to think through is exactly what we want. Really glad the recent improvements are landing for you, and thanks for recommending us.

Basic w/o paying

Only a handful of remedial scenarios until it continually pops up for you to Subscribe.

I tried signing up to see if it unlocked more, but now I feel like I was scammed and they will Sell my Info

Great app! Rated too low

I really like the daily puzzles and explanations for each answer. The main course is excellent too. I’m excited for more content. I also like that it’s easy to learn poker terminology along the way, with many words clickable with definitions included. It definitely deserves a higher rating, and I hope the app keeps growing!

Response from developer

Love hearing this. Really glad the daily puzzles, explanations, and clickable definitions are making poker terminology easier to learn. That mix of clarity and real practice is exactly what we are aiming for. Thanks for being in our corner.

Not clear

The questions they give you are so vague sometimes they barely explain what they want you to answer. Very unclear. You get wrong answers because of the little information they give you.

This app is meant for “beginners” with elite poker level knowledge required at the same time

Response from developer

That’s a fair callout. If the questions feel vague and the early path still assumes too much poker knowledge, that’s a miss on our side. Poker Skill should help beginners understand the why, not make them feel like they’re already behind. Thanks for spelling it out.
