Not great for tutors, earning is essentially a gamble!
As a tutor, I like that Preply allows you to set your own hourly rate and manage your availability. However, the payment structure makes earning worthwhile income difficult, especially for new tutors. Preply takes 100% of the tutor’s earnings from the initial trial lesson, followed by a commission on subsequent lessons, and there are also withdrawal fees. I understand that the platform needs to make money, but not receiving any compensation for trial lessons- despite the time spent preparing and teaching them - makes the earning potential feel very low. For example, I have been on this platform as a tutor for about a month and have done about 4 total lessons. Out of those, only one of them was a non-trial lesson. Since my price was set at $15/hr, my total earning from these lessons was $8 total after commission and withdrawal fee. So I essentially spent 4 good hours teaching and a few hours prepping beforehand just so I could earn $8? Varsity tutors is better overall as I can earn a fixed $18/hr every time I teach. Overall, I think the platform has potential, but the tutor compensation model could be much more fair.

Very Poor Customer Service and Frustrating Platform Experience
I am very disappointed with Preply’s customer service and overall platform experience.
Every time I need assistance, I have to wait 20–40 minutes just to reach customer support, and even then, many issues are not properly resolved.
The platform itself is full of frustrating problems. For example, transferring unused lesson credits from one tutor to another is unnecessarily complicated. Sometimes the system converts credits into strange fractional lesson amounts, and other times it simply refuses to allow transfers.
Finding the customer support chat is already difficult enough. Once you finally reach someone, it can take another 30 minutes or more to resolve even a simple issue.
Lessons can also be unexpectedly cancelled or interrupted by system problems or tutor mistakes. Trying to recover your lesson credits afterward is incredibly frustrating and time-consuming.
We are not talking about large amounts of money—sometimes it is just the cost of a single lesson. But customers should not have to waste so much time fighting to get back what they have already paid for.
To make matters worse, the overall quality of tutors is quite average and does not justify all these headaches.
My honest opinion: I would not recommend Preply. The company needs to seriously improve its customer service, credit transfer system, and overall reliability. Customers deserve a much better experience.

It’s a subscription trap
Great teachers, but the platform is so confusing and built to trap you into a subscription that you can’t get out of easily.

My teacher is the most amazing teacher! The app is wonderful and easy to follow. I have learned so much already in just a few sessions.

Can’t cancel or get refund
They force you to auto pay over and over and then you can’t get your money back. Awful.
