Prexy: Story Notes

Prexy is a notes app for people who work in stories. Every note carries a slug, a beat and a status. That one decision is the whole app: the file you write in and the list of what you owe are the same object, so nothing has to be copied from your notes into a tracker, and the tracker can never quietly go stale. THE BOARD Your stories, in three columns that match how work actually moves: Not Started, In Progress, Completed, each with a running count. Filter by beat. Beats are yours to define — the list ships generic and every one of them is renameable, deletable and reorderable, so it can describe your desk instead of somebody else's. On the Mac, a global keystroke opens a capture panel from inside any app: type a slug, pick a beat, and the story exists. Prexy can live in the menu bar, in the Dock, or both. WRITING A real editor, not a text box. Bold, italic, inline code, strikethrough and links, with keyboard shortcuts that behave the way they do everywhere else, and find-in-note for long files. Adjustable text size, a proper dark mode, and a typeface chosen for reading a screen full of prose. PLAIN FILES, ALWAYS Prexy keeps a plain-Markdown copy of every note in a folder you choose, alongside any files you attached. Ordinary text in ordinary folders: readable in any editor, searchable with any tool, backed up by Time Machine without knowing Prexy exists. This is the part worth caring about. Your work outlives any app it was written in, and it should never need this one to be readable. ATTACHMENTS AND LINKS Drag any file onto a story — a document, an image, a PDF, a transcript — or add it from the file picker. On the Mac, Quick Look previews it in place instead of sending you off to another app. Link one story to another, and the story you linked to shows you what points at it — so the background you filed under one slug surfaces when you need it under a different one. TASKS THAT LIVE IN THE STORY A checkbox line inside a story can become a reminder in Apple Reminders, ticked off from either side. Notes are where the work is described; Reminders is where scheduling and notifications already work well. Prexy connects the two and then stays out of the way — it never sets a due date, and never overwrites one you set. SYNC THAT IS YOURS Your notes sync between your Mac, iPhone and iPad through your own iCloud account. Not through a server of ours — there isn't one. Edit the same story in two places before they can reconcile and Prexy keeps both versions rather than picking a winner, and every note holds a version history you can read. NO ACCOUNT, NOTHING COLLECTED No sign-up, no subscription, no analytics, no advertising, no third-party services. Prexy makes no network requests of its own. Nobody but you can see your notes, and that is a property of how it is built rather than a promise in a policy. Built for reporters. Useful to anyone who thinks in stories.
