Does progression accelerate?

I see each area can be unlocked at 2.5k & 250k & 25m & 250m. Building costs scale similarly. Do I only earn 50-100 Gold per wave, 1 gold on pickups, until the next area? Can’t make multiple buildings & there’s not meaningful upgrades you can get while fighting, so the game feels limited early on. Don’t really feel motivated to grind for base stat upgrades (that’s all buildings give?).
