Pay Your Rent or Be Evicted from Rain Sounds
All but one of this app’s features are gated behind a monthly subscription fee. There is no way to know if it actually does what it says on the tin until you start a recurring subscription. The one feature you do have access to is activated through what I would call an egregiously artsy “roll the dice” UI that only further hinders figuring out if this app is worth paying anything for.
Subscription fees are harder to get refunded than one-time purchases.
Further, say you do like the app and you subscribe for a year, but the developer doesn’t keep updating the app or adding any of the promised content. What do you get to keep for that $60 you paid out? An ambient audio “app” with a confounding UI that only makes sounds until your lock screen kicks in. Feels exceptionally scammy.
What happens if you support this guy for years and then he just pulls the app from the store? You keep nothing. Sony can’t even get away with that without backlash.
I don’t want your work for free. I’m willing to pay a premium for your art. I support many artists and devs monthly on Patreon and Ko-fi. But I have to know I’m getting what they claimed to be offering before I hand over my money. I’m not there to be anyone’s sugar daddy.
I loved Thunderspace. I would have paid A LOT to purchase this Rainlayer app for a one-time fee. I would have made additional in-app purchases if new rain sounds were periodically offered. I would have even started a subscription to support the dev if I’d been able to confirm that any of the advanced features actually work for me, and if my subscription let me keep ANYTHING resembling a functional app if I eventually had to cancel.
Maybe there are enough wealthy people out there with infinite money to throw away on “premium audio experiences” or whatever he called this. For the dev’s sake, I hope that’s true, because the only version of the app I can rate without paying a subscription fee is the terrible trial he chose to make available.

Your central claim is still incorrect: you do not need to start a subscription to test Rainlayer’s paid premium features. Rainlayer provides a 30-minute full-access trial with no subscription and no commitment. A subscription also does not represent permanent ownership, and Rainlayer never claims that it does. I'm not aware of other apps that do. The subscription pays for continued access to an actively developed product, including substantial updates and new content. You’re completely free to prefer one-time purchases, Patreon, or any other business model. But disliking a subscription model does not make that model deceptive, and hypothetical scenarios about what I might do years from now do not make Rainlayer "scammy" either. For reference, my former unrelated app Thunderspace has served tens of thousands of people exceptionally well for over a decade, and most of them have paid less than $10 for it. Meanwhile competitors were charging $60 a year. Not complaining, just stating the facts. Judge the app harshly if you dislike the experience. But maybe judge what Rainlayer actually offers, rather than what you imagine it might someday become.

Not sure why anyone would subscribe to this. Not even clear if it works, and even if it does, you’re just paying rent for white noise. I guess fools and their money are soon parted though.

Nice that you tried the wind system in Thunderspace. You’re right about the long-term cost comparison. Rainlayer is priced to support ongoing development, updates, and maintenance. Things Thunderspace's one-time model struggled with in the past. I’m exploring a lifetime unlock option and would genuinely value your thoughts if you want to reach out via email.

Rainlayer 并不是 Thunderspace 的换皮或重新包装版本，而是一款全新的应用。Rainlayer 中的所有雨声录音都是全新、独一无二的，并非来自 Thunderspace。 Thunderspace 和 Rainlayer 是两个完全独立的产品。你当然可以更喜欢其中一个。

You were better off with thunder space
Honestly I don’t know why you stop working on Thunderspace but i would’ve kept developing that app cause that app was great. You could have added DLC’s to it aswell! Like you get 10 more rain recordings for 15$ and just kept adding more and kept developing the app. Also this app used Thunderspace as a base for it. So yea if you wanted more money people would be FAR less upset that you updated there current app and not replaced it then asking for more money.

Rainlayer did not replace Thunderspace. They are entirely separate apps, built around different concepts and technologies. A previous purchase of Thunderspace therefore does not grant access to Rainlayer, just as purchasing one unrelated app does not entitle you to another. Rainlayer is a new product, not an update or replacement of Thunderspace.

Die Aufnahmen in Rainlayer wurden nicht aus Thunderspace oder meinen früheren Apps recycelt. Jede einzelne Regenaufnahme in Rainlayer ist einzigartig und wurde speziell für Rainlayer erstellt. Die Aussage „immer noch kein AirPlay“ ist schlicht falsch: Rainlayer unterstützt AirPlay 2, und hat darüber hinaus noch weitaus mehr zu bieten.

Rainlayer currently costs $39.99 per year, and you can use the app for 30 minutes with full access before deciding whether to subscribe. There’s no commitment during the trial, so you can experience Rainlayer properly before paying anything. Also, there have been plenty of great updates since August 21, 2025. Check it out!
