About

RayMol brings high-quality molecular visualization to macOS, iPad, and iPhone — built on the trusted PyMOL engine with a modern, native Metal renderer. Load a structure from a file or fetch any entry from the Protein Data Bank, then explore it with smooth, real-time graphics: • Representations — cartoon, sticks, spheres, surface, mesh, ribbon, dots, and labels. • Real-time quality — analytic ray-cast spheres and sticks, smooth tessellated cartoons, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, real-time shadows, and order-independent transparency. • Hardware ray tracing — on Apple-silicon GPUs, add ray-traced ambient occlusion and shadows live, and export crisp high-resolution images. • Themes — Classic, Paper, Sunset, or Dawn, or design your own with the live Theme Studio. • Sequence, selections, and measurements — a synced sequence viewer, named selections, and interactive distance/angle/dihedral tools. • Movies — build and export camera, scene, and state animations. • Scripting — the full PyMOL command interface for power users. RayMol runs entirely on your device. It collects no personal data and includes no tracking or ads.

What's New in RayMol

1.11.1

September 14, 2026

Rendering • Spline cartoon. A smoother path tessellation removes the per-residue creases and facets on strands. On by default; the classic cartoon stays selectable as "Spline ribbon". • Faster real-time ray tracing, with traced shadows and temporal ambient occlusion. The pass now costs about half what it did, with a new RT resolution control. • Fixed: sticks could render with flat, notched ends and a full-length color ramp instead of the hard color change at mid-bond, after the Move gizmo was shown. • Fixed: ray-traced shadows and ambient occlusion ignored moved objects and surface clipping, and could show acne, stripes or sawtooth edges on twisted strands. • Fixed: the key light and shadows now follow PyMOL's light setting. • Fixed: Exposure, Outline and the surface clip sliders only took effect after the next interaction. • Fixed: a horizontally squeezed scene whenever a multi-state object was loaded. Colors and selection • PyMOL's tiered color menu is back - a row per hue, opened for its named variants. • One tap now picks a base color in the "C" menu. • Fixed: the sequence viewer listed objects that weren't displayed, and now highlights residues live while you drag-select. Design • Keep/Discard is docked outside the scrolling Design action row, so it stays reachable. • The Design action row scrolls instead of displacing the layout on iPhone. Sessions • Opening a .pse no longer silently replaces your work - you're asked to Save and Replace, Replace, or Cancel. • Fixed: proline's ring was left open in sidechain sticks.
