User reviews

My experience working for Relay has been very disappointing.

For example, you may be given a 2-hour delivery shift, but in reality the work can sometimes take 3 hours or even longer. When there are extra parcels or delays on the route, the additional time is not always properly paid. You can end up spending extra hours working for little or no extra money.

Another issue is undelivered parcels. If you cannot complete all the deliveries within the allocated time, you may have to return the remaining parcels to the original location. In my experience, the extra time and fuel involved in returning these parcels are not properly compensated.

There is also a concern about the payment shown for some shifts. For example, a shift may be advertised as £38, but after completing it, the amount appearing in the account can be £35 or £33. This should be clearly explained and transparent.

I would advise anyone thinking about working for Relay to carefully check how payments are calculated, especially for extra time, additional parcels, and returning undelivered parcels.

Drivers work hard, spend their own fuel, and give their time. The payment system should be fair, transparent and reflect the actual time and costs involved.

Mixed review

It’s not the worst, but also not great. I also do food delivery on a moped so if I were to compare relay, it does have some advantages such as guaranteed work and pay and no waiting around for orders.

However, I feel like it’s a company that doesn’t value your efforts. You pay the fuel, insurance, servicing, maintenance, and it’s your own vehicle you use. Relay doesn’t need to provide you anything, yet they pay just about minimum wage for completing the drops only. Nothing else is taken into consideration. And most of the time the routes take longer than the expected pay. So when your day is finished, and you’ve worked extremely hard, you’re not going to end up with much, especially after deducting all of your expenses and tax.

Also, if something happens that is out of your control, such as your vehicle breaking down or a major road closure that prevents you from completing your route, your performance will be affected when you have to end your route and return the parcels, even though you have a valid reason that is out of your control. And eventually, you might get suspended if things happen enough times.

I did however enjoy relay to a certain extent, I always did like 1 or 2 routes a day here and there just to combine it with food delivery and maximise my earnings, hence the 3 star rating, but I don’t think I can ever do this full time. Very cheeky company that basically pays you below minimum wage.

Former driver

Overall, my four months using Relay have been a mixed experience. The flexibility and convenience are genuinely some of the app’s biggest strengths, particularly being able to choose how much you work and which areas you want to deliver in. The app itself has also improved significantly since I started, with fewer crashes and much more reliable navigation.

However, the low pay on pre-booked routes, frequent cancellations and ongoing navigation issues can make the experience frustrating. The biggest issue for me has ultimately been the repeated account suspensions for what Relay classifies as “unsafe deliveries.” In my experience, these flags were sometimes issued despite following the delivery procedures, and I was never given a clear explanation of what had caused them. After several suspensions, my account was eventually permanently off-boarded.

For anyone considering Relay, I would say the flexibility is a major advantage, but you should also be aware of the inconsistencies with pay, shift availability and account enforcement. Personally, despite enjoying many aspects of the platform, the uncertainty surrounding suspensions and the permanent loss of my account has ultimately left me with a negative overall experience.

There is money to be made in my area if you put the hours in and are very efficient. Sometimes the routes take longer or you have to travel to a further pit stop to what you expected and none of these extra costs are considered. Sometimes routes have rediculous prices and after tax sometimes if haven’t done enough hours it’s not worth it. The app Navigation is really poor and it’s not accurate the app can also be glitchy and delivery photos fail to go through.

Unfair Delivery Disputes

My experience with the Relay app has been very disappointing. I completed my deliveries and followed the required process, including taking two proof-of-delivery pictures as requested. Despite this, some customers reported that their parcels were not received, even though I had evidence showing the deliveries were completed.

The communication and support from Relay have been frustrating. Drivers should have a fair investigation process where their proof and explanations are properly considered before serious decisions are made.

Couriers work hard to deliver parcels correctly, and Relay needs to improve its support, communication, and review process so drivers are treated fairly.
