sensor data please
Most of the time the app works just fine. I like the overall design of the app and the useful graphs. However, sometimes it looses the schedule and it won’t allow you to fix that via phone app. Apart from the reliability concern, I miss two features: 1) know how warm the tank water actually is (if different from set point) 2) double number of schedule times from 4 to 8.
And please fix your embarrassingly false claim that the „energy saver“ mode is the most efficient („heat pump only“ it is!!).

Very inferior app
This App is very poorly designed and even more poorly updated. As an HVAC contractor that sold the Rheem and Ruud products for over 5 years, I feel this is the least innovative and most problematic user interface I have worked with.
I installed an Econet capable system in my home with 4 zones, the app shows 6 zones due to it somehow duplicating two of the zones by itself after being installed for almost 3 years. Other issues include when using the app I will try to change the temperature in a zone and it won’t change. The app also shows a different temperature than the thermostats on the wall show.
I would not recommend this product to anybody with so many products from manufacturers that do a much better job of designing an app that easily interfaces with the product they are made to control. Very poor quality control.

No problems here…
I got the Rheem 50gal Hybrid Electric water heater and after reading these reviews I wasn’t even going to bother with the app, but eventually I though let me try it out. It’s worked perfectly for me since day 1. Setup was simple enough, and the schedule I tested and it works. Just set it to a time and mode and temp for the time and day you’re on and once you hit follow schedule it should change immediately. Key step there, seems some people did not hit follow schedule and so it’s not working. But either way it’s working great for me. Even when I out away from home and someone at home needs to shower and do laundry and maybe my tenants next door are doing laundry also, I just open the app, turn up the temp and change the mode to electric or high demand and once I get home I look and the actual heater and it says what I put it on the app, so it does work.

Gladiator Water Heater
Just bought the heater 3 days ago. EcoNet connected to my Wifi just fine. The EcoNet app works fine except for it has a notification that the shut off valve is not installed. Either the connection has a problem or the EcoNet doesn’t pick up the LeakGuard. I called support for Rheem and they had me call EcoNet. Then EcoNet said that the problem is not the EcoNet and gave me a number to call. You guessed it! It was Raheem's number. So I am just going round and round. Anyway I will update the stars once this issue is resolved.

Great water heater, app not so much
I had no trouble installing the app and connecting to my new ProTerra, but using the app is something else. On launch, it always says the heater is disconnected (according to my router and the heater’s panel, it really is connected). The app takes a good 45-60 seconds to initialize. I have no idea whether the scheduler works, because the preset times don’t correspond to my plan and they can’t be edited. Notifications are completely hidden; tapping the alert bell just brings up a “no alerts” message without saying what, if any, alerts might possibly fire.
I wish this “good hardware, terrible app” thing wasn’t so common. Rheem, come on, hire some competent devs.

Oh well
I’ve tried both the generic EcoNet app and the Rheem branded one, and both are equally useless. Neither will connect to my water heater even though they can see the WiFi network it broadcasts while it’s in setup mode. Since I can’t even get past this step I can’t tell if it would be able to connect to my WiFi, or how/if the app works. I guess since I didn’t even know the heater had WiFi when I bought it, I’m not really missing anything, but I guess I’ll never know. I’ll leave this installed in case they ever update it to fix these issues, but I’m not holding my breath based on the poor reviews.

Scheduler is broken, no response from Rheem
I’ve had Rheem’s ProTerra Hybrid Water Heater installed for about 3 weeks, and though the basic water heater is good, the ‘smart’ features are terrible, as is the customer support. I’ve now confirmed that the scheduling functions frequently don’t work, and can’t be corrected or disabled through the phone app when this occurs, it has to be done manually on the heater console. I’ve had a problem report in to Rheem for days, with nothing except an automated response. If you just want a water heater this is a good product, but Rheem doesn’t have a clue about software development or customer support.
Update: Was unable to connect the app at all the other day. App behaved as if there was no device registered, and got stuck in a loop trying to enter a new one. Finally got to customer support by phone and was told they’d had a server glitch and the account had to be re-initialized. Support guy was pretty good, but all history was lost. Now things appear to be working better. We’ll see…

Remarkably bad
I can’t believe any organization would release such a crappy product. Even after getting thru the needlessly difficult pairing process, fundamental functions don’t work. Its an exercise in patience to schedule anything.
The schedule routinely doesn’t apply if the device disconnects from wifi on its own whim, and won’t resume schedule on its own once reconnect. That is if it chooses to reconnect at all.
Even when connected, the app is buggy and just won’t respond. It’s like a college intern did the worst job they could, to spite their crappy employer.
Of all things, you’d think alarms and alerts would show up as notifications in app. Nope, kept locally on appliance, no notification on app. Why even create the UI and marketing for this feature if it’s not implemented.
Rheem needs to fire their entire dev and firmware teams and start again. This is absolute trash. Will never buy a Rheem product after this experience and would recommend everyone else to stay far far away.

Tank is good. App is irritating at best.
The tank itself is fine. I am growing to hate the app. The scheduling option was a big reason why I went for this model and it seems incapable of actually following it. I have it set to be hotter (140) in the morning and evening, when we’re home, and it sits at 110 consistently while saying it’s following the schedule. When I try to manually turn the temp up the app freezes briefly then goes back to 110.
If I want to change the temp, I have to go down to the tank itself and use the control panel. It’s not tragic but I’m definitely not getting what I paid for.

Rheem needs to step up its game before the competitors do
It is obvious that people expected a lot more from this app and that is likely due to Rheem doing a poor job on painting expectations about what to expect.
At a minimum I expected to see what the current temperature is in my HW tank and am appalled not even that is provided.
The operation scheduling and electrical usage is valuable and one could live with a blindfold on about the current temp. Maybe as time passes the old codgers who believe the customer does not need anymore information or App improvements will retire and the younger information hungry generation takes over then we can all go elsewhere and whine about other things.

Can’t connect device to app
For the price, the water heater was easy to install, so great water heater. Its been running for 2 weeks without any issues. The issue is this WiFi enabled EcoNet app thing. It just wont connect. The 7-days a week support is true, both times I called on a weekend and got someone on the phone in under 5 minutes. We walked through the setup a few times and they kept saying it had to be either my WiFi password being wrong or I didn’t have 2.4GHz enabled on my router, or even my iPhone or iPad were too new. I confirmed my password, 2.4GHz, and well my iPhone is 2 years old, so the first tech admitted they have been getting alot of issues like this, took the mac address of our unit and said the issue woukd be escalated and dealt with in about 2 days. I saw the ticket was closed 2 days later but still couldn’t see the device in the app. I called a week later and the tech confirmed that the ticket was closed, but eould reopen and escalate it. I’m going to check again in a week. I’m assuming this feature works, so I’m going to call them again bext week, but it is frustrating that they aren’t able to deal with this issue. So I’m giving the heater 4 stars, but the app unfortunately is going to get 2 stars, but it might not be the fault of the app. If I can ever get the device to connect I’ll edit the review.

Nice when it works
Well. I like the unit and the energy savings, but that’s about it. The company would rather know where you live than provide useful stats in the app. The water was cold so I adventured to the basement to find the water was warm in the upper tank but 59 in the lower tank and since I can’t view this in the app I stood there for 38 minutes for it to reach a temperature that my wife would not yell at me for. Everything, I mean everything, that is on the unit display should be able to be seen in the app. Poor or lazy developers is the only reason this is not available today. I am sure If they could find a small amount of time to simply do that then most of these bad ratings would go away.

Changes don’t go through
The number one reason I use this is if somethings going on where I suddenly need to switch the mode to provide more hot water. 99% of the time I tell the change to happen in the app and it completely ignores it and does nothing. Even the app just ignores it and continues to show the previous settings. So incredibly frustrating. I found a few cases where the water heater did the change, but the app told me it didn’t. If the apps not reliable at all, what’s the point?

Appliances great. App does the bare minimum.
Installed new Rheem heat pump and heat pump water heater. The appliances are great, with the heat pump almost keeping up with our old, leaky house in -25° C weather this week without even resorting to resistive electric backup (and no problem with the resistive electric providing a small boost). The app is barely serviceable. Connecting to wifi was a huge hassle; finally got it to work after weeks by turning off home wifi, changing my iPhone name to that of the home wifi network, and setting up the thermostat using a hotspot. Then disabling the hotspot and re-enabling the home wifi once the thermostat knew the name and password made everything work. Now that the thermostat is connected to the app, the app does the bare minimum: it shows the current temperature in the house, the set point, and gives me the ability to control the schedule. It does not display anything beyond the most basic data: doesn’t show the outside temperature from the sensor on the heat pump (crucial information for a heat pump that a weather station temperature from the internet doesn’t provide), it doesn’t say whether the resistive heat is turned on, and doesn’t say the current fan speed. Also, there’s no history information. For the water heater, it shows the setpoint (and has energy consumption history, which is great), but not the current temperature. No HomeKit support (not a big deal to us, but might bother others). We are told (but haven’t verified) that we cannot use a third-party thermostat or app with the appliances, so no choice. Summary: appliances are great, and we have eliminated fossil fuel energy in our home in favor or hydro and solar electric power. App lets me use the basic thermostat functions from anywhere, which is the bare minimum I expect from an internet-connected appliance.

The worst app ever written
Where is the zero star rating? I don’t care if you use the old version of the app or the new version, it is virtually impossible to get the device to connect. The app is useless. Did anyone at Rheem actually test drive this app? Not some IT guy who knows how it’s supposed to work…how about install a water heater in your gardeners home, hand him an iPhone, and ask him to set up his new water heater. Let me know how it goes. Rheem should stick to what they do best…make things that heat and cool stuff. Their IOT attempt is an utter failure, and the “hi-tech” auto shutoff valve on their platinum water heater is a joke if a drop of moisture gets anywhere near it. I’m so disappointed and wish I’d never bought their modern products.

Works, But Design is Poor
I’m reviewing after using for two weeks for a 50 gallon hot water tank, not HVAC. It connected easily enough, the set schedule set up worked but wasn’t smooth. The aspect I was most looking forward to using was just knowing how much hot water is in the tank, but the tiny icon (why so small?!?!?) doesn’t really give much more than a rough guess, it is either full, half full, or empty. Half full can mean you can get a hot shower for 5 minutes to 15. When a family member ask, “can I take a shower?” after someone else just did, it’s little better than a guess. Which isn’t that different than before with my “dumb” one. Haven’t use other features, like leak detection yet (hopefully never will!”

Not sure how this app passed testing phase
Going from a Nest to this garbage really frustrates me. I added the device 5-6 times and the app will not retain the device. This makes the app pointless. I am not the only one experiencing problems with the app but it seems like support doesn’t exists, even the support link on the AppStore app page leads to a 404 page not found error. It has not been updated in 4 months, and is probably a security risk to have it installed on your phone at this point. There are so many better options in the market, I do not know why the installers used this device.

Good, but needs to be better
1) outside of apple’s app feedback, they don’t attempt to solicit any feedback and feature requests on the app, which is unfortunate. 2) Daily scheduling only allows up to 4 points in a day where a mode can be scheduled (off, high power, energy save, etc) This is not good for folks like us who use peak-hour power billing and want several different modes during the day and various payment schedules. Needs at least 6, if not more. 3) Someone in their infinite wisdom engineered the unit to forget the scheduling every time the unit loses power, even for a flicker, which is often. Sad that apparently this can’t be fixed via a flash update. 4) the biggest over-arching error here is caring to ask what the owners need / want, and instead relying on apple feedback to do it. Sad, because the feedback is now public when it could have been direct.

Terrible App
Only gave it a 2 star because connected easy and tell me the temp and easy enough to adjust temp
Otherwise… it dies nothing
Use in a vacation home
Away setting never works to decrease energy use and storage temp. Proximity setting is even worse since this is in a vacation home and no cell coverage in over 1 ½ hours by car. Have left for weeks and never decreases temp or usage of energy. Support is… clueless
Come on guys…it has such potential if you’d just put a little time into it

The app and the water heater ARE GREAT!
I am puzzled by the large number of negative reviews concerning the app. When our new Gladiator water heater was installed, I set up the Wi-Fi portion of it with no problems at all! It worked the first time and has CONTINUED TO WORK FLAWLESSLY ever since.
I like the scheduling portion of the app and have had ZERO problems with it. I'm also very pleased with the power usage statistics. They are easy to follow and understand.
I have NO suggestions for improving the app. It works perfectly fine as is. It does what it is supposed to do!
