Good local coverage, hindered by lack of e-mail link interoperability

Very detailed and comprehensive coverage of Seattle and Washington, with balanced coverage of issues. One thing that I wish the functionality would include is cross-link launching of articles in the app from links in subscriber e-mail. Often times I click on a link to an article in the e-mail, which launches the browser (for which I have to always log in to read in private mode). Instead, it should launch or link to the article in the Seattle Times Mobile app. It’s a pain and a hassle that it doesn’t do this. (Feature request by a subscriber). For this, I give the mobile app 2.5 stars.

Need additional subscription to use

I pay for the Seattle times online subscription to read unlimited articles. But even when logged in using that account I can only read 2 articles on the app. You need to buy a SPECIAL APP membership to use the app fully. Trying to support print media by buying an online subscription only for them to insist on you paying even more.

Why no comments?

Why are you not able to view comments or make comments on any articles like you can on the website?? The NYTimes, Wa Post, Boston Globe, LA Times all have comments!

Come on Seattle Times… I expect better from you!!!

No longer a free download, false advertising

Started using the app and it was free local news, then 15 articles a month, then 5, now only 3.

Just charge for the app. The slow baiting and switching isn’t free and I’m done being a reader at this point. What use is a 3 article limit???

Last update nuked Top Stories

After the latest update, the Top Stories page won’t load any content. I really want to support local journalism but the mobile app has been pretty consistently terrible ever since it launched. The ST should either retire it and only support the mobile website version, or actually make it not suck.

Too much clickbait

Less clickbait headlines!

Works half the time

I’d say Articles load correctly about 30-50% of the time. A junk app

iPad app doesn’t show photos

I’m so tired of waiting for them to fix this issue… You open an article and no photos are displayed. Works fine on the iPhone, but not on the iPad.

App still refuses to recognize my account

For more than a year I have been unable to access my valid Seattle Times subscription through this app. The website lets me right in with my username and password but the app insists they are “unrecognized.”

Let me subscribe via my Apple subscriptions!

Until then, I won’t subscribe.

Stop with the clickbait headlines

They finally got a search bar and some of links- instead of none- now open in the app, so it’s better than it used to be, but please stop with the clickbait headlines. Currently- “Tens of thousands of UW Medicine patients have been waiting for this news.” You’re a news organization, don’t write headlines like. The app is still poorly organized. Half of what’s on the top news page is on the local news page. That’s just a waste. Not to mention what ends up on top news is often ridiculous and have to go to the search bar (thanks for finally getting one!) to find actual news on things I already know are happening.

Why pay for free news?

They print the exact same thing you can see on KING5 for free with added whining about irrelevant issues that affect .01% of the population, all blown out of proportion to appear as a full-scale tactical assault on all humanity.

Seattle Times deserves better

Photos do not render properly and linked articles don’t launch the app. The Seattle Times is a valuable resource for our region. The reporters and subscribers deserve better. A stronger app could also improve revenue at a time when the paper needs it.

Good paper; mediocre app

This app is annoying enough that I’m compelled to write a review. For some reason, when you click on some links to other Seattle Times stories in the app, the app sends you to safari, where you have to log in to your Seattle Times account separately. Why?

Equally annoying, the algorithm at show Seattle Times stories to you in, for example, the google search app, but unlike other news apps, when you click, it doesn’t take you to the app on your phone, and you hit the paywall. Annoying.

These issues are not groundbreaking or insurmountable. Is there a shortage of competent app developers in Seattle????

Pictures not loading

Recently, pictures did not load on articles for the iPad and now with the new version they do not load on the iPhone either.

Overpriced

Mostly a bunch of stories you could read anywhere. But the biggest issue is the price, they still haven’t figured it out. Most folks are not going to pay $20 a month for a digital only subscription and they know it because for the exact same price you can get digital plus the hard copy Sunday Paper (if you live close enough to Seattle). Now they’ve restricted free stories to 5 a month trying to force people into subscriptions, when they should just lower the price to $9.99 or less. 1/2 of something is better than nothing. At $19.99 a month they aren’t competitive with a more extensive news source like Apple News at $12.99 a month. Whoever is in charge of marketing is delusional or they’ve decided the only market they’re going to chase is the well to do in Bellevue and the working class folks can just lump it. There are plenty of news sources with more extensive coverage for a lot less or even free. Yeah they have some unique reporting now and then but most of it is reprints from other news organization like the AP, Washington Post and NY Times.

Good Overall

The Seattle Times app is great. I use it to stay up-to-date local news. But, the search function does not work at all. Recently certain parts of the app are appearing funky.

Basic functionality is missing—the app doesn’t enable access to reader comments.

Need ability to read and write comments

A request for enhancement: please give us the ability to read and write comments in the mobile app. Currently you can only do this in a web browser. Thanks.
