Fix the metronome
I was all about purchasing Tonal Harmony Pro until I saw that it’s from the same company. Tonal Harmony Pro seems like a game changer, even if it seems a bit “”non-intuitative.”” I can handle non-intuitive with time and patience, but when parts of an app simply stop working there’s nothing I can do on my end.
I wanted to leave a one star review but I can’t in good conscience since the app was so great before it stopped working. Please fix this.
Sincerely,
A previously very satisfied and now a severely irritated customer.
Perfection
Very good but...
I have been practicing with the app sight reading machine before, and I think you can get some ideas of improvements from that app. I think see music has some better stuff like the recording option, and the option of choosing in between triadic or steps music, but the other app has some features that this one doesn’t have as well. In the other app you can choose exactly the type of notes you want to read, and the key signature you want to read. In the other app you can add dynamics to the music. In the other app you don’t have the visible tempo mark always there and you have an option to play only with the metronome and not with the music going on.
Unfortunately they are not making updates in the other app, so I decided to buy this one and suggest you some changes to make it better.
And this ones are my ideas...
Option to sight read more than 8 bars
A + and a - to change the tempo accurately
An option to read more than one note at the time
An option to record myself and be able to listen to it after
A community of people using the app made from the app
Metronome does not click on iOS devices
Does amazing things, but glitchy
However, it is rough around the edges and the app’s performance has degraded over the past month—perhaps due to OS changes?: 1) The awards page does not save the averages for the day anymore (never did save for the week) 2) The metronome sound now only plays the first beat and some times start of 5th measure. 3) Sometimes metronome stops altogether and/ or the app crashes.
I would so love for this to work as intended. I have tried re-installing the app and contacting developer via email, but awaiting response. I have an iPhone 8 with no other programs running.
Other comments:
Sometimes the Correct % seems more reliable than others. (Is it most reliable at the default tempo? Just tell me if that is a known issue, so I’m not trying to figure out whether I am actually getting worse at slower tempos?)
The progression is not transparent (does it give harder/easier exercises based on your performance?—if yes, what actions start you back at the beginning? Reopening? Changing a design parameter? Tempo? Not discussed in video tutorial.)
The navigation is needlessly clumsy on iPhone. (Move the “conductor” away from mic/start icon or put it under Settings for those that want it. I keep accidentally turning it on and it’s annoying. Eyes need to be looking ahead of current note anyway. Always have icon for something in same place — e.g. designer at bottom left, create excecise bottom right etc.)
As other reviewers say, I really would like to be able to pick key(s), similar to setting a user-defined range. See Tenuto for picking keys.
The See Music score/graphic means what? Explain.
Doesn’t work
I’m already seeing small improvements!
If there’s a few things that I would like to see on this app is to have an additional feature for guitarists to read Bass Clef. Going through the list of instruments that I could choose to sight read on, I have noticed that the Cello has two clef choices. So why can’t the guitar? I would think this would benefit well for any performances that would require me to read in Bass Clef instead of Treble.
Another thing I struggle with sometimes are the key signatures, instead of grouping them, how about an option that’s similar to the isolate button on notes and be able to practice certain key signatures instead of randomizing?
Those are just a few bits of criticism, but overall I still enjoy using this app, and I’ll continue to use it every day.
Half a review
I’m primarily interested in learning to sight read Irish music for a beginners session. That means I need only one, two or three sharps in my key signature. It also means that triplets are played as two 16ths and an 8th and not as uniform duration notes.
I really don’t need and won’t use any music that doesn’t have one, two or three sharps. (I don’t say keys since Irish music is often modal)
The worst is; I’m not actually on a viola but playing a five string violin. I read my music on treble and bass clef but it’s presented here on alto clef. I can live with that but my own scores are written with treble and bass with a one ledger line gap so C is in the space between treble and bass. I’d love to be able to have my music span both clefs with the ability to space the clefs as needed.
Yes, the last is a bit extreme but perfect for five strings.
Yeah, half a review. Limiting key signature choices is primary here. Between whistles, flutes that are really fifes, fiddles, button accordions and concertinas the common ground is one to three sharps and only soloists go beyond that.
Am I missing something here?
Response from developer
There are other instruments besides piano. This app is mainly for band instruments and to learn how to sight-read melodic lines and to practice rhythms.
Junk
App is almost worth it.
The function of the app however it doesn’t work quite as expected. One of the main reasons why I bought it doesn’t really work very well.
The problem is that after completing the exercises, the app doesn’t properly display your accuracy (missed notes and wrong rhythms). It pops up for just a moment, then disappears almost instantly. That’s not a very effective way to be able to track your progress.
There seems to be no available fix for this.
Response from developer
That problem was fixed on the latest version 3.5.4
Really excellent for learning to read... after all these years...
1 bug though, and a feature request: using an Apogee HD interface for my guitar, the first note of every other exercise gets detected as soon as the exercise starts, which falsely gives a wrong answer. When I play my first note, the exercise is on the 2nd note, so I get that one wrong too, and so on.
I’ve learned to notice when it happens and restart the exercise, but I get MANY “wrong” answers and it takes down my score, so to speak. Add a 1 - 2 second delay to the start of each exercise maybe??
That and auto-advancing the exercises so that I don’t have to reach over and tap 3 different things just to get to the next exercise. (Tap to clear the cheer screen, tap to load the next exercise, tap to play...)
Extremely unstable
Won’t even open, refund?
My iPhone is up to date and it’s an IPhone 8. This app won’t even open on my phone and I paid for it. Please fix this issue or ensure that I receive a refund.
Mic keeps failing
Would be a good app without the bugs.
Update: there appears to be no way to reply to the developer response to this review. So I will have to put my response here. I am using an iPhone 7 Plus. Initially the app functioned as I described below, crashing after a few seconds of recording. Now the app doesn’t appear to record it all and even in play mode will not change the tempo. The set tempo is very fast, too fast to be useful for teaching children. And there is no possibility of changing the tempo. You change the tempo in the tempo section and no change occurs. My iPad is now functional again. I would like to try and see if this app would work on the iPad. But even though the iPad is on the same account I am not allowed to download the app again without paying for it again. I can’t justify paying again for an app that initially worked and then stopped working on another device. It seems only fair that I should be given a refund for the copy that doesn’t work at the very least. I would then be willing to try purchasing another version for the iPad because I would really like to see this app work. If there is some way I can contact the developer and work these things out it might be helpful.
This would be a great app if it worked. It downloads and starts, gets the kids just far enough that they actually want to do it and then glitches and causes a lot of strife and frustration. The main glitches so far are the conductor icon appears and disappears and recording stops four notes in. It’s not the conductor icon is off, it just isn’t there and neither is the metronome icon next to it. There is there no way to get it back beyond resetting the entire app with all data gone. This happens every 20 minutes or so so there is no way to store data in the app. And resetting takes time and causes students to lose interest. The app also glitches during recording. At random times it will lock up so that it will only record the first four notes. Then it stops recording and shows all other notes as missed. Again the only way to remedy this is to reset the app.

UPDATE 3/1/2018 2:00PM We solved your problem with the app reading only 4 notes and stopping. There is an update with the fix waiting for review right now and it should be available very soon. We still can't find the reason why you are being requested to pay again for the iPad version and we are working on it. Please contact us to the email address on our website mDecks.com (you'll find an updated email address at the bottom of the page) and we promise we will make it right. Also, we found a bug on the microphone access in the latest version 2.2.1 and we have send a new version with the fix to the App Store which will be available soon. As to other issues you described, it seems to us that they could be easily resolved by watching the tutorial included in the app (in the preferences panel, which you can access with the button at the top-right). Also, please make sure you have no other apps running while using See Music since they could be affecting its performance. Thanks for your feedback. Hi, thanks for the feedback, it's very useful and detailed. Could you please let me know which device you are running the app with? We haven't been able to reproduce your problem yet, I am wondering if it could be your device model, I've tried it on almost all the devices without any of the problems you mention, thanks again.
Excellent!!!!!
It works flawlessly and the design is awesome. Highly recommend it.
