About

Sin Wave Combo gives you a wave and asks you to destroy it. A target wave is displayed on an oscilloscope screen — a smooth blue sine curve rising and falling at a fixed frequency and amplitude. Below it, your wave. You control three parameters: amplitude, how tall it is; frequency, how fast it oscillates; and phase, where along the cycle it begins. Adjust all three until your wave is the mirror image of the target — same height, same speed, shifted by exactly half a cycle in the opposite direction. When the parameters align, the two waves cancel. Their sum, shown in the third panel, collapses toward a flat line. The residual energy meter empties. You submit. This is destructive interference — the same principle used in noise-cancelling headphones, acoustic engineering, and signal processing. Sin Wave Combo makes it tactile. You see the beating pattern that forms when frequencies are slightly mismatched. You see the residual wave that remains when amplitude is off by a fraction. You see the phase relationship sliding toward cancellation as you rotate the dial. The mathematics is real and the feedback is immediate. At low scores the target uses clean parameters — whole number frequency ratios, phase shifts at obvious angles. You develop intuition quickly. Then the parameters become less round. A frequency ratio of 1.73. A phase of 2.41π. The target no longer snaps into place through simple logic — it requires a calibrated feel for how each control affects the sum. As your score climbs the targets grow more complex. Two sine components combined into a single waveform that cannot be perfectly cancelled by one wave alone. Cosine terms that require understanding the relationship between sine and cosine — that cos(x) equals sin(x + π/2), that a cosine is just a sine with a different starting point. Eventually, clipped tangent waves that can only be approximated, where the score depends on how close an approximation you can find. Sin Wave Combo is a game about mathematical intuition. About developing a feel for trigonometric functions through direct manipulation rather than calculation. Players who complete it understand wave mathematics in a way that no classroom exercise produces. No ads. No timers at first. No random events. Just the wave, the controls, and the flat line waiting to appear.
