Learn wine and your own palate

While I love Sommo’s powerful features and attractive design, I first want to call your attention to the privacy features of this app: this app doesn’t sell your data! It is so refreshing not to be the product, unlike most other apps. That alone is well-worth the token price for the premium product.

Sommo works great for discovery through individual bottle scans as well as the ability to quickly find gems from an entire shelf in the store or at home. A key Sommo distinction is the dedicated wine AI—this is not a “wine-skinned” chat GPT. This means that with a scan, it gathers more than the usual amount of info about the producer, vintage, and grape, which please my data-focused heart.

This app shines when it comes to personal palate discovery as well as learning about wine. The AI learns you as you go (and as you change over time) so it can best recommend how a given wine would hit for you. It suits my needs for my cellaring (I have under 100 bottles). While this is not a social app in the typical way, it allows us to share racks and “mix palates” to find wines to suit us both. I have yet to explore more of the group tasting features, but am looking forward to the experience.

Wonderful app!

New to wine tasting (paid version)

Helping me to taste wine better. I am drinking less and enjoying it more! Buying better bottles. I use the full notes. But the real value is making my own comments. The AI feedback picks them up as well as the WSET notes. Also trying more varieties. Get ideas from Tom Gilby and try them out.

Blown away

I had given up on the old wine cellar apps knowing there was a better way to use AI and information sources to serve up an experience. I was about to create me own when I came across Sommo. No need to make my own now, this app is quick, super easy to use and setup your cellar, and has no mis-scans, can find ANY wine, I have when to drink and food pairing at my fingertips and that’s just the start of it.
There’s also tasting flights, journals, education, you name it.
I’m in the industry and clearly this team are too - they have the whole experience nailed down. Well done 🙌

Great UI, but the content needs to be more reliable

I really like the UI of this app. It includes everything I was looking for in a wine learning app, such as the ability to type in answers and receive automated grading.

However, I’m currently preparing for WSET Level 3, and some of the content seems to be either outside the scope of the textbook or simply incorrect. For example, the app states that Merlot is a late-ripening variety, which is not accurate.

At the moment, I don’t feel I can fully rely on this app for my studies. That said, I would be happy to come back once the content becomes more reliable and more closely aligned with the textbook.

Response from developer

Thank you for such thoughtful, specific feedback. First of all, I'm glad the interface and the typed-answer grading are serving you well; that mode was a big focus. You're also right to hold the content to a high bar, and you're right about Merlot; it's an early-ripening variety, and that mistake has now been corrected. More broadly, I've just overhauled the WSET Level 3 material: substantially expanded and rewritten the question bank, aligned it more closely with the Level 3 syllabus, rebuilt the mock exams so they stop repeating, and reworked the answer options so the correct choice is no longer simply the longest one. A study tool is only as good as it is trustworthy, so if you come across anything else that looks incorrect or out of scope, please tell; you can reach us through the in-app feedback option (or at support@sommo.app) and I'll personally review and fix it promptly. I hope you'll give Sommo another look, and I wish you the very best in your Level 3 studies. - Gökhan

Must have for anyone with a cellar(s)!

This app has absolutely saved me! I have felt my wine collection has been out of control for a long time. I tried spreadsheets - too hard to manage.
Now, scanning in wine, placing them in cellars that match what I have, so easy!
Find a bottle, grab it, open and removes it from inventory. Easy to move bottles in the cellars. Understand what you have, when you should open it and even more, the AI understands your specific tastes! Fantastic app!

Nothing to Wine about

This app is incredible! My wife and I are wine novices who have wanted to get more into wine, but the barrier to entry always felt a little intimidating. With this app, it feels like we have our own private sommelier wherever we go, minus the usual arrogance and condescension. The label-scanning feature is especially awesome and makes learning about wine actually fun. One of the best and most useful apps I’ve used in years. Thanks for leveling up our wine game!

Missing features

The only way you can add wines is by scanning them, and the free version only includes 5 scans. I tried it multiple times and was unable to get the scan to actually work. Really wish you could add a wine by text searching. If you don’t have the bottle or a wine list it’s impossible to add. I don’t want to buy the premium version if the dang thing doesn’t work!

Update: As of version 1.6.6 and onwards, adding a wine by text searching is available. --- Hi there, adding wines by name is an actively developed feature and soon to be available with no limits. I am really sorry that the scan failed for you, and really appreciate if you can drop an email to hello@sommo.app, it would be my absolute pleasure to help you.

Everything I need in one place to enjoy wine at home, or out in the world!

This is simply my most used and favorite app. It is so useful, approachable, and easy to utilize immediately. This is my wine sidekick for everything from tasting wine and quickly journaling notes, or planning a dinner party, to organizing and learning more about all the wines I have at home!

Better than Vivino and Delectable for me!

I downloaded a handful of wine apps and have imported some of my favorite wines into them to cross-compare the apps and test them out. Ultimately, I’m seeking a wine “profile” that helps me better understand what kinds of wine I’m drawn to so I can be confidently more selective in the future.

Sommo is fantastic and my favorite of all the apps I’ve tried! It has correctly identified niche wines that both Vivino and Delectable failed to find. The scanning feature works flawlessly and the graph-style testing notes is the perfect visual companion for each wine to help me understand what makes me like each one.

I highly recommend!

Cant recommend it enough

I tested a lot of wine apps and finally found the right one. I always stuck with the same few bottles and couldnt really find anything I liked, or actually, didnt know how to find it. Sommo actually tells me if I would like something or not. I just scan whatever I see in the wine section and voila. I had always wanted to explore and learn more about wine without making it a hassle or deal with snob workshops. Thanks to the quick quizzes in here I actually learned a lot. I feel like I can talk about tasting notes without feeling like a fraud. It’s become one of my favorite apps and everytime I go to buy wine I cant wait to scan everything I see with Sommo and find out what I can. Kudos to the developer.
