Sound Recall

Sound Recall trains auditory sequential memory: the ability to hold a series of sounds in mind and remember what came in which order. You hear a run of everyday sounds — rain, a chainsaw, a dog, a church bell — and then reproduce the order you heard them in. It was built from an occupational therapy angle, for anyone working on listening, attention and short-term memory. THREE LEVELS Level 1 — Guided. The sounds are listed for you. Tap them back into order. Level 2 — Hinted. Type what you heard, with help available when you need it: first the category, then the shape of the word, then the chance to hear the sound again. Every hint you use is recorded, so progress is never overstated. Level 3 — Brutal. Type what you heard. No list, no hints, no replays. BUILT TO BE USED, NOT ADMIRED Nothing in the app scrolls. Every screen fits as it is, so nothing is hidden below a fold — which matters when you are concentrating on listening rather than on an interface. Answers are matched forgivingly. "dog barking", "barkin" and "woof" are all accepted for Dog, because the skill being measured is memory, not spelling. The dashboard is the first thing you see: successes at each level, your accuracy, your streak, and which sounds you miss most often, so practice can be aimed where it is needed. A LIBRARY THAT CANNOT BE MEMORISED Ninety different sounds, each with several different recordings — hundreds in total. A fresh recording is drawn every round, so you are never learning one particular dog bark. The vocabulary stays small enough to actually learn, which is what makes free recall possible at Level 3. Every recording is public domain or openly licensed, from Wikimedia Commons, and the app shows the licence and author of whatever is playing. If a recording is ever wrong for its name, one tap removes it from all future rounds. AWARDS AND REMINDERS Nineteen awards mark real milestones rather than mere participation, and a daily reminder can be set for the days that suit you. PRIVACY No data is collected. There is no server, no analytics and no tracking. Your progress stays on your device, and if you sign in with Apple it syncs to your other devices encrypted with a key held only in your iCloud Keychain — so neither Apple nor we can read it. Signing in is entirely optional; everything works offline without an account. Sound Recall works on iPhone and iPad, and needs no internet connection.
