What's New in Subtext

4.0.0

September 29, 2026

Subtext is out of previews. It's opening night. Every screen has been redesigned and rebuilt, and it runs faster too. You'll feel it the moment you open it. - Live read is here. Tape with a real reader, live, in a video call made for actors. Send your reader a link and the script opens in their browser, no app needed. You'll need two devices on your side: one to hold the script, one to film. Put your prompter on your iPad and shoot on your iPhone's back camera, and Subtext mixes your reader's clean audio from their device right into your take. No more reader coming out of a tinny speaker. Shooting on your own camera? Import the clip and Subtext finds the matching take and mixes your reader in. - Stuck on a line? Say "Subtext, line?" and you'll hear the next three words. Ask again for the whole line. - Your Journal holds your thoughts now, not just your auditions. A line that stuck, a note from class, a picture of the coat that's exactly the character. Write it down with the plus in Journal. - No reader tonight? Record the other lines in your own voice from Invite a reader, and they play when you rehearse and tape. You can always add a fellow actor later. - Add your headshot to your profile, and it goes with every tape link you send casting or your agent. Thanks for being in the house on opening night. Love Subtext? A rating on the App Store goes a long way for a one-person team. Questions, or something not reading right? Contact support lives in Settings and lands straight in my inbox.

This has CHANGED THE GAME

What a beautifully executed app for actors. Sending your sides to a friend to read and then that becomes the voice I act off of is amazing. It parses scripts perfectly. The voices are really good. It lets me overlap and talk over it which is great. Just so many nice touches. The annotation stuff over the script is so good. I love the notes how they’re little dots and tabs. And that I can record the self-tape and I get a hosted link? Wow wow wow.

Great tool for actors

Uploading sides and scripts to rehearse is very intuitive, and it’s been incredibly helpful for memorizing lines in a pinch. Highly recommend !

The best I’ve used

Subtext is a real game-changer for working actors. Created by a working actor to specifically cater to our wants and needs. I’m off-book faster and more confident on stage where it really matters. With a responsible and ethical approach to AI and by far the gold standard in support, I’m a happier actor.

This is truly the best app for us actors. Wow. So well done, bravo. 👏🏼

About time

I hate AI, but this is a tool that can help sharpen you as an actor, so you can be an actor, not the other way around.

Response from developer

You know that moment where the hero is struck by the enemy’s power but rather than having it plunge their heart they’re able to grasp it in their hand and thrust it back? That’s Subtext. You totally get it. Thank you.
