The device is awesome, support not so much
Being able to listen to the birds outside while I’m warm inside is amazing. I love it and will often leave the app running all day when I’m home.
But when my device stops working, it takes several days to weeks to get a response from Support. There’s no trouble-shooting feature in the app. It’s impossible to log into the terralistens website to check on the status of my ticket.

what happened?
What happened with the last release? I can no longer live stream from my unit, or listen to any of the past recordings.
Excellent concept, poor execution
This app is very frustrating because the concept is excellent, but the execution is poor. The sound ID system regularly misses Northern Cardinals, but flags my neighbors dog as a Great Blue Heron. The app is unintuitive and buggy. It doesn’t actually stop playing when you hit stop, so it drains battery until you force quit the app. The Live Map and Radio Tags parts are impossible to use because of the overload of data and lack of filters.

Unit does not stream
Support gave led status check info which appears normal. Unit online. Nothing further received from support to requests for resolution.

Terra has been a pioneer in developing a home device that monitors overhead and nearby birds by both call and by any tracking devices on them.
As with any pioneering device there were teething problems both in getting the device out and developing the software.
But my device has been working now for a year and the latest version of the iPhone app is really slick.
And I can monitor the device on my iPad and my Windows computer browser as well.
Definitely worth exploring to understand the birds around your home.

Just doesn't work. Support non-existent
I was part of kickstart. Finally received the device. But not some add ons I ordered and paid for. It was not easy to set up but it 'worked' for awhile. Then it didn't. It simply doesn't even start. The light doesn't even come on. They worked with me for awhile but I have now been ghosted by them for several months. Save your money.

Still not working
I have had a Terra station for over 8 months, and keep checking monthly or so expecting an update to fix the many issues, but still no joy. Now the app crashes whenever I tap to monitor to my station. Other major issues are that the app does not offer all of the functionality of the website (like account settings or tech support or… and doesn’t point to the website, you need to figure that out yourself, and nothing mentions the related website Featherworks, which offers more options available nowhere else) but the websites now do not recognize my account, so I am stuck. I still support the concept, but very frustrated because the execution is so weak, and currently broken.

I participated in the Kickstarter project for this device & ordered one for my yard and another as a gift. Set up was very iffy & took over an hour, but finally the Terra station started transmitting.
The ID’s are correct only about 75-80%—this is fairly bad. The app misidentifies a substantial number of birds as rarities but misses common species that are actively singing. Cornell’s free Merlin app, by contrast, is 90-95% accurate & includes the ability (lacking in Terra) to save audio recordings & spectrograms for verification. Sharing the full live feed of the station doesn’t seem to be fully supported. Without major improvements, I would not recommend Terra at this time.

Need to verify identifications; buggy
This is a review of the app, not the hardware. As of April ‘25, I found the app lacking in features and buggy. The IDs are truly exciting but I need to be able to verify them: the sonogram is coming (has been for a while?), but at least the IDs should have their associated sound clips that are uploaded to the database. (This would also allow me to check whether human speech is really obscured in the uploaded clips, because it’s loud and clear on the app.) Filtering the ID list is buggy (species appear and disappear!) and crashes the app sometimes. It’s impossible not to compare this app to Merlin—wasn’t collaboration possible?? Most of the missing features seem to be wheel reinvention.

Waited Four Years For Garbage
We participated in the kickstarter for this project. After 4 years we received part of the initial orders. Bluetooth is not hard, everyone and everything does Bluetooth. A day trying to set it up and I am ready to chuck it in the garbage. Better to buy a used phone, install Merlin and stick in the yard.

Wonderful
The device was easy to set up following the instructions in the app. And it works great! It actually picks up more birds than Merlin does on my phone. Mine is hearing ducks from a pond that is about 1/2 mile from my house. The device came with multiple ways to mount which was great. My house doesn’t have any external outlets currently, so I ended up putting it between the window and screen and that worked quite well. It picked up a barred owl within 5 minutes of turning it on, and I was actually able to spot the owl the next day! The app itself has a lovely interface and I love the way you can filter the ID history. I could not be happier!

Instructions only get you so far!
Got the Terra device assembled and online with home wifi. The directions were not the clearest and it took 30 minutes or so for the "listen to backyard birds" to show up at the top of the page. But once I started using it, it was fun to listen live to the birds. It does a decent job identifying the birds but not as good as Merlin ID. That may improve. Still waiting for the update to download the spectrograms. Still, neat to hear the backyard birds!
