About

The Forest School App is your field companion for the woods - the record book that works where you do: outdoors, off-grid, on your phone. Free for practitioners - there's nothing to buy in the app. Built by a forest-school practitioner, it's made for the one job that can't wait for a desk or a signal: capturing what happens in your session as it happens. Mark the register, check your ratio, log the risks you're managing, record observations and photos, note any incidents, and reflect when you're done. Everything saves to your device the moment you tap, and syncs automatically when you're back in signal - so a flat battery, a soggy notebook, or no bars in the woods never costs you a record again. This is the in-the-field half of the system. Planning, bookings, your risk-benefit library, reports and admin live in the web back-office; the app is built to be fast, focused, and usable with cold hands and one thumb. IN THE WOODS, WITH NO SIGNAL • Registers & ratios - mark who's here, count your adults, and see your adult-to-child ratio is right at a glance, with a logged override when a higher ratio is justified. • Weather go/no-go - record your site-check decision and the reasoning behind it. • Dynamic risk log - capture the risks you spot and the actions you take, as you take them. • Observations - record children's learning against developmental areas, tagged to the child and the activity. • Photos, consent-first - the camera won't open for a child without photo consent, so you can capture the moment safely. • Incidents & accidents - log the type, severity, and action taken, on the spot. • Reflection - close out the session with your review while it's still fresh. • Your professional record - keep your DBS, first aid, qualifications, and CPD with you, ready when an assessor asks. WHY LEADERS USE IT • Works fully offline - every tap saves to your device; nothing waits on a signal. • Built for the woods - fast, glove-friendly, and shaped around how a real session runs. • Syncs automatically - back in range, your records flow up to the back-office on their own. • Your data stays yours - private by design. Plan your sessions, manage bookings and groups, build your reusable risk-benefit library, and produce professional session records and PDFs in the web back-office - then head into the woods with the app. From a one-person setting to a multi-site provider, The Forest School App keeps the paperwork out of the mud and lets you focus on the learning.

The register asks who is here and who is not, and nothing else. Signing children out is its own button: one child when somebody leaves early, or everyone still here at the end of the day. It records the time they went, and the session report shows it. Add an observation from a child's own record, or from a session that has already finished. It asks which session, then opens the usual sheet with the child ticked. You can edit an observation later and add a photo to one written earlier. An observation changed after it was written says "edited". The first aid, accident and incident forms are findable from Home, from the More menu while you are running a session, and from the quick incident note. They fill in with no signal and send themselves when you are back in range. A risk assessment you keep as your own file opens on the phone, PDFs included, and stays on the device so it reads with no signal. Organisations that asked for it can add a sixth development area, social communication, alongside the Forest School Association's five. The version you are on is at the foot of Home, with a link to check for updates.
