About
Every fall, monarch butterflies fly up to 3,000 miles to a handful of forests in central Mexico — a journey so long it takes four generations to complete the round trip. No single butterfly makes it home. They hand the trip down.
The Long Way South turns that migration into a five-week walking challenge. Your real daily movement — steps, wheelchair pushes, or active minutes from Apple Health — carries one monarch south to the oyamel fir forests of Michoacán, then home again on a milkweed-gated relay across the generations. Move more today and your monarch flies farther today. Rest, and it waits for you. You never lose miles.
Along the way you learn why milkweed is the whole story: it's the only plant a monarch will lay eggs on, and the only thing its caterpillars eat. On the journey home, each leg asks you to choose where to lay eggs — pick anything but milkweed and the line ends. The lesson is the mechanic.
WHAT'S INSIDE
• A five-week migration paced to real life — a target, never a punishing deadline
• Movement your way: steps, wheelchair pushes, or active minutes
• A living field journal of the real science, with classroom-ready sources
• A Home Screen widget showing your monarch's current leg and miles to the next stop
• A generational lineage: finish the round trip and your monarch passes an inherited trait to the next of your bloodline
• A meadow you fill by learning your local milkweed — and a nudge to plant some for real
WHAT IT WON'T DO
• No GPS or location tracking
• No accounts, no ads, no analytics
• No pay-to-skip — the only way forward is to move
• Your Health data never leaves your device
Built for classrooms, families, and anyone who wants a reason to move that means something. Plant milkweed. Walk a monarch home.

A warmer welcome. New arrivals now get a short, clear introduction: what the journey is, why milkweed is the whole story, and — most importantly — how it actually works. You just move through your day; your monarch flies on her own. That's the whole thing. Also new: • Name your monarch after her first flight, once she's really going • An optional daily reminder, with a little milkweed or monarch fact each time • Your "days moved" now only ever goes up — there's no streak to lose
