The N5 articles I’ve read so far are all super short, so not overwhelming even though I’m not a great Japanese reader yet. I love that there is a feature for me to practice translating and that it is so easy to look up the words directly in the app and review them later as flash cards.
I work with a tutor and normally we just talk about what we did over the last week. I’m looking forward to being able to talk about something a little more varied like current events :)

Doesn’t feel worth it anymore
Unfortunately, that seems to have changed. Many of the recent articles feel AI-generated or heavily rewritten rather than being the original news text. The source of the content is often missing, and the overall quality and difficulty of the reading material have noticeably declined. For serious JLPT learners, especially those preparing for higher levels like N2 or N1, practicing with authentic Japanese is essential, and this change makes the app much less valuable.
It’s disappointing because I paid for the lifetime version based on the quality the app originally offered. Now it feels like just another app filled with AI-generated content instead of genuine reading material.
My recommendation is to try the free version before paying for a subscription. I’ll continue looking for better alternatives, and if I find an app that provides authentic Japanese news and higher-quality reading practice, I’ll update my review.

But whenever I open a news article, my background music stops immediately. It would be great if the app didn’t interrupt music unless audio is actually played. I hope this can be fixed in a future update. Thank you!

Used to be great, now aggressive AI marketing push
It still is usable, but plagued by issues (text selection fights IOS system text selection constantly) and there is a very aggressive AI push going on. Floating AI functions buttons everywhere, a new premium+ tier with a regular popup, and for what? Translations and a chatbot. Guess what, *I* want to translate this stuff. Also, the news might now be AI fabricated instead of human curated.
