Token Skip Lock is a game about which words actually matter — and why the answer is almost never what you expect.
A sentence appears in large warm type on a dark screen. The player reads it. They have as long as they need. Then they begin tapping words to eliminate them — each tapped word fades to a ghost, barely visible, holding its place in the sentence like a dim memory. The sentence grows darker as words disappear. Three remain. The player presses Lock. The AI responds.
The disagreement is the game. Human readers assign importance by feel: vivid nouns feel important, concrete verbs feel important, the word that carries the emotional charge of the sentence feels important. The AI assigns importance by logic: which words, if removed, would make the sentence mean something categorically different? Which words are load-bearing in the structural sense — the ones that cannot be recovered from context, the ones that invert the meaning, the ones that create the turn?
A sentence reads: she was smiling but her eyes were not. Players almost always keep smiling and eyes. The AI almost always keeps but. Because but is the only word doing real work — it is the hinge the entire sentence turns on. Without it, two observations. With it, a portrait of dissemblance. The AI annotates each of its choices with one sentence of explanation. Players who missed but read the explanation and immediately understand — and immediately see it everywhere in language afterward.
Six sentence categories. Negation sentences, where a single word like never or barely reverses the meaning entirely and players almost always eliminate it because it feels small. Pivot sentences, where a conjunction creates the entire emotional content. Precision sentences, where an exact number or qualifier is the only non-recoverable element. Reversal sentences, where the load-bearing word is the one that creates irony or surprise. Emotional sentences, where the important word controls the register rather than the content. Technical sentences, where a relational word like before makes the difference between an instruction and a description.
After each sentence, the original reappears with annotations blooming from the load-bearing words — amber for surface implications, gold for deep ones. Players who missed a word see exactly where it was and what it was doing. The explanation is always one sentence. It is always enough.
A running alignment score tracks what percentage of word choices match the AI's across the session. Typical players stabilise between fifty-five and seventy percent. Players who have understood the game's logic reach eighty or ninety. The score is not a measure of intelligence. It is a measure of how well the player has learned to read the way a machine reads — attending to structure over feeling, to load-bearing function over vivid content.
The sentence always did all of this. Token Skip Lock just makes it visible.
