The best mapping app for USA
I’ve used a lot of different mapping apps for exploring the USA but this is far the best for outdoor use, particularly in the Western USA.
The original TopoMaps was excellent, this huge update is even better with many new features including the ability to record tracks and to draw planned routes on to the map.
Measuring distance between current position or between map features remains easy. Waypoints and tracks can be colour coded or set to use different icons.
Aerial photography remains present as well as 3D topographic data.
The ability to plot my own photos from all my iOS devices and the direction which they were taken is excellent as is the automatic syncing of waypoints and tracks between devices.
Unlike the original app, this one also runs on a phone too, another excellent feature - easier than referring to an iPad when hiking.
I’m sure there are other features I have forgotten, overall, a superbly capable and inexpensive app. The developer has always been responsive with support requests too. Thank you!

Unusable
Extremely useful for me
I do bear management in the national forest and this app is invaluable to me. I take many photos of grizzlies and black bears and having the photo location on the map makes it so much easier for later reports. Love the old USGS topo maps. Loved the original app but this is better once you get used to it and has way more options. One thing I would like fixed in a future update is that some settings revert back to default sometimes when you force close the app like customizing button locations and photos back to off. The app should remember previous settings. The offline capabilities is great, no cell connection necessary. These are USGS maps that show old historical places, mines, cemeteries, old town sites which all other map apps leave off because either they don’t think that’s of interest to people or they don’t want people to know where they are which is a shame. So if you’re into finding historic places there’s no other app better than this. The subscription price is reasonable and worth it. Great for backpacking too because you know exactly where you are. You can never get lost and always know if you’re on the trail.

No longer supports iPad
Used older version which supported both the iPhone & iPad. Now you must upgrade to v2 and a subscription service to get iPad support. This is sad since while the app was not perfect, it worked pretty well. If I have to pay for the maps, I’ll move to All Trails. Deleted the app.
Poor
Po or resolution when zooming in. Roads are not highlighted. Not enough labels on prominent areas like lake, reservoirs, cities. Not impressed.
