About
Learn to write Chinese characters one stroke at a time. Trace Chinese turns handwriting into a calm, daily habit: five characters a day, real stroke-order artwork, and gentle memory checks that help each character stick.
TRACE EACH STROKE
Follow a numbered start dot and an arrow to draw every stroke in the correct order and direction.
DISCOVER THE MEANING
A character's meaning, pinyin and pronunciation stay hidden until you finish tracing it, so every character feels like a small discovery. Tap the speaker to hear the character spoken in Mandarin using your device's built-in voice.
YOUR DAILY 5
Each day, the app builds a short lesson of five characters: new discoveries mixed with characters due for review. Finish your five, then stop for the day or keep going if you like.
TEST YOUR RECALL
Two kinds of memory checks help you remember what you trace:
• A quick meaning check after tracing a familiar character
• "Test my recall" rounds of five questions, where you match a meaning to the correct character from three choices
Need help? Ask for an optional hint. Hinted answers are honestly marked as assisted practice and don't count toward unaided mastery. After each answer you'll see a short explanation, including comparisons for look-alike characters such as 日 and 目.
GROW YOUR MEMORY
Characters move through three stages: Introduced, Practicing and Remembered. A character counts as Remembered after you recall it correctly without hints on three different days. Missed characters return sooner, and correct ones are spaced further apart.
MADE FOR YOUR PACE
• Choose Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced to match how complex the new characters are
• Focus on Everything, Everyday essentials, Numbers & time, People & family, or Nature
• Pick full stroke guides or lighter hints
• Explore a library of 300 characters
• Include or exclude individual characters and reorder your study set
A GENTLE REMINDER
Turn on an optional daily reminder at a time that suits you. Reminders are scheduled on your iPhone, with no streaks to protect.
BUILT FOR EVERYONE
Supports Dark Mode, Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, Reduce Motion, and both iPhone and iPad.
YOUR PROGRESS STAYS WITH YOU
Progress is saved on your device. Stroke artwork is based on Make Me a Hanzi data under the Arphic Public License, with credits available in Settings.
