Great magazine, disappointing app

Trail is a great mag, no doubt. Using their app however has largely proved painful. It has logged me out every time I pick up my iPad or phone to use it again, and logging back in is hit & miss at best.
Once you’re logged in the app is slow and clunky and often requires multiple close/re-opens before it finally does what you want.
The only reason it gets two stars and not one is the ability to download and read content as if you were reading the magazine itself. Good luck achieving this inside a few minutes though, you’ll need patience to login, download and then finally be able to read the latest issue.
I’ve just tried logging in this morning and it keeps failing, so I can’t read anything.
Really disappointing when you’ve paid for the service.

*Before an admin/developer replies to this review; no, I don’t want to send you an email telling you all of my frustrations and reasons why it doesn’t work for me - I’m clearly not alone in my experience. Your app should just work when it’s a paid for service.

Very shoddy behaviour

I subscribed to Trail magazine and now that my subscription expired I no longer have access to the issues that were mine as part of the subscription. If I had known at the outset that the issues were only on loan to me, I would not have paid for a subscription at all

Don’t get everything you pay for!

I got the digital subscription. I can not access any of the bonus magazines.
I messaged Trail Magazine but had no response.
You are better of buying the paper copy and get all the freebie’s.

Sub par App

The download of issues is rarely consistent and even when it works it is very slow. There is also no way to export the issues to PDF.

Don’t think I shall be renewing my subscription.

Impossible to log into

We have full subscription but From the get go we have gone in circles trying to log in but nothing works. After several emails ( the ones where you get the impression they have not actually read your email) we briefly gained access to the app but have now lost it. Cue more confusing journeys being redirected to Mag website , do they want username ? order number ? email?? Who cares - we have given up . More trouble than it is worth. Obviously will not be renewing subscription

I love this Magazine…

I absolutely do not like the digital view or the Home view.

BUT…

Go to Archive and you can select the Magazine view. Phew!!! It is like having the printed version on your iPad. I just love the layout and style of the printed copy.

Unable to register or log in

I downloaded this app to receive a free magazine as an apology for late arrivals if my magazine. It doesn’t recognise my online account details or let me register. I’ve sent screenshots of the issue as requested but all I’ve got is told to reinstall and try again. Same problem and told to try again. Not worth the hassle just for a free online magazine

Poor Experience and just a PDF viewer

It’s a poor app generally but overlooking the dated and average at best looking user interface and front end, the worst part of this app is that is not actually a digital magazine reader at all. It literally just open the PDF of the print version of the magazine? It’s utterly terrible to read on a phone/tablet.

To read it you need to scroll around and zoom right in as the text is both tiny and fixed. It’s woeful, not a mobile or digital optimised experience at all. Quite literally the PDF print file on a two page spread. I wouldn’t touch the digital subscription unless this is app is completely redesigned and the magazine is an actual digital product made for and useable on digital devices and not just a token effort print file exported PDF.

Brilliant

So excellent appeasy to use and beats having to walk to the newsagent

Is this an app or just a pdf viewer?

Basically a scanned version of the magazine, hardly pushing the boundaries here. Ads popping up despite the fact you’ve paid for the magazine.
Downloaded it based on a quick scan of the app rating but positive reviews are because people like the magazine content rather than rating the app itself. Save the bother, stick to the paper copy.

App doesn’t talk to your subscription

The app itself is great and easy to use. However be aware it doesn’t talk to your magazine subscription. So Bauer media took £31 direct debit from my account for my annual digital subscription on 22nd June. At 9th August they had still not updated my details in the app to show I’d paid, so I could not read the magazines I had paid for. They did sort it out but lots of hassle I didn’t need. What’s the point in selling a digital subscription that requires an app if the app doesn’t know you’ve paid for it. Really poor service.

Great app great magazine

I am a regular subscriber to Trail magazine and I look forward to receiving it each month.
The app is great too. Thank you

Reasonable

Great mag 10 years ago
Too many photos of people “out on the hill”
Not enough narrative and more gear reviews(this isn’t by mr Thompson by the way)

Doesn’t open in iOS

Latest update (w/c 10 Dec) refuses to open in iOS.
Unusable.

Absolute Must

Fantastic magazine, wouldn't be without it.

Best for routes

I,be been subscribing for a year now and have loved every issue. With 12 routes included every month I now have my own personal library of routes that grows every issue.

Trail magazine is disappointing

The title Trail magazine is misleading it would be better titled "climbing magazine" because as far as I can see its articles focus more on climbing than on walks and wild camping which is what I am interested in, so this magazine is sadly not for me.

Terrible

I'm sure the magazine in printed format is well worthy of 5 stars however as a magazine for the iPhone 6 plus format it's well below par . I was unable to read the text due it it being blurry ,a waste of four pound which I will be attempting to retrieve back

Works well as an app

Trail magazine on an iPad works well....almost. Photographs especially are mostly excellent. Magazine content is relatively easy to find and as an add-on to the paper subscription package it works well for us as a family; daughter gets the mag and I get the iPad version which I can read on the move.
Magazine content is well balanced now; good range of articles, equipment reviews and motivational ideas.
Only complaint is that moving around the magazine is extremely clunky and long-winded compared to other publications... no capability to press page numbers and go straight to articles (on my iPad anyway....with other publications I can).

Shockingly bad

I hate using this app, it frequently crashes, rarely allows me to open past issues, the ability to exit the issue you're reading rarely works and it never remembers my place. Simply the worst app I have used and because of this I am unlikely to renew my online subscription.
