Not Umazing.. 😹

(5 stars so it isn’t hidden.)

The concept is great, I enjoyed the movie, the manga, the show, especially as an equestrian and someone who lives and breathes the horse racing industry.

However,
The game is just.. bad. There’s no other word to describe it. I can’t stand the game. Why?

- Beginners tend to rely on hints the game gives and unknowingly ruin their careers because the hints are not at all truthful and aim to destroy your career, not actually help you like they’re supposed to.

- There’s no tutorials for how to *actually* be successful in your careers unless you take the time to go searching for them. (Like for example, there’s no tutorial for how to build parent umas, there’s no tutorial for how to create good card decks, there’s no tutorial to properly teach you what to prioritise (i.e focusing on sprint and power for one horsegirl, for example— beginners will aimlessly try and spread out stats between all training options and then again, fail their career).

- The game lies about how much storage you actually need (this part bugs me the MOST). It’s in the mb in the app-store. Then it demands you download 14gb more when you get in-game; that’s fine, whatever; but then even that is a lie because it ends up taking up close to 16gb storage, then asks you to download 7gb more??? What an ‘umazing’ way to chase away your mobile player-base.

- The gacha system is absolute garbage. You have like a 0.5% chance of pulling a 3 star / SSR. From what I remember someone found out you’re only ever *guaranteed* something of substance once you’ve pulled around 200 times (?).

- The game heavily favours players that spend bucketloads of money (Ha! Who thought?) If you’re f2p, you’re essentially left in a giant ditch that you need to spend your entire time playing the game just crawling out of only to be *barely* halfway close to where anyone else who pays is. I refuse to spend money, gacha games are addictive and literally just glorified gambling for kids; and that’s partly why I can just barely catch up to other players, I’m only *just* scraping by UG ranks on my pc with a f2p deck (and barely that, I average S+ and SS).

- If you have horrible luck, or are just generally an unlucky person don’t even bother with this game. It relies heavily on luck for literally everything you do; you could even pay your way to the top by investing in top-tier decks and or cards but with poor luck your careers end up running themselves into the ground and render your time and money completely pointless.

- The grind is relentless and definitely sets the busier players back way more. I work with racehorses as mentioned prior, I’m up at 3:30 or 4 AM just to get to the yard and do my duties; I’m there until 12, sometimes stretches to 1. After I finish everything else I have to do that day, I’m left with an hour, sometimes an hour and a half to play the game— which, if you know, isn’t a whole lot of time to actually start trying to play (especially considering the game is so heavily focused on grinding, even more so when you don’t spend money).

- The gacha system is just poo, like aforementioned.
There’s no carry-over pity system; it makes the game so unnecessarily hostile for f2p, new players, or low-spending players).
Players are forced to choose between their favourite umas and ‘meta’ support cards; and it’s even crueler when Cygames releases the more universally loved horsegirls on global servers that players can’t pull for because they’re saving for meta cards to get semi-decent careers.

- This isn’t necessarily Cygames’ fault, but it’s a fair warning for new players; the player-base is genuinely just made up entirely of just horrible people. If you get lucky and don’t find the pedophiles or the zoophiles or the people that make suggestive or nsfw work of the umas, then you’ll either find the most toxic people ever that dog on you for not prioritising ‘good support cards’ and pulling to make yourself happy, then you’ll meet the people that are annoying and incredibly misinformed and uneducated about actual horse racing; you’ll find that these are the people that do incredible amounts of damage to the industry and don’t like hearing that they’re wrong (despite having zero prior experience or knowledge around horse racing, they simply started casually dabbling into it a year ago because of the global release).
And as an actual equestrian with experience in the racing industry, I for one can confidently say I’m getting sick of seeing people call every grey horse they see Goldship (bonus points if they don’t even look the same)
And don’t even get me started on the people that laugh and giggle about actual horse abuse videos, talking about how it’s ‘Umamusume!’ simply because it’s a horse. I for one am actually appalled whenever I see people joking about Jajamin’s Debut and comparing her to Goldship; even though if you knew anything about equines then you’d know both of those horses are/were some of the most famously stressed and behaviourally challenged horses I’ve ever seen.

Overall, in short/summarised

Bad game, bad game design, bad game mechanics, bad playerbase/fanbase.

Best mobile game ever

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby is an absolute masterpiece of mobile gaming. It delivers a deeply engaging training loop, gorgeous race animations, and a heartwarming narrative that hooks you instantly.
What makes it truly special, however, is its incredible real-world impact. Cygames and the player base have transformed the game into a massive vehicle for sports preservation and philanthropy.
Industry Revitalization: The game has introduced a whole new generation of fans to the history of horse racing.
Life-Changing Charity: Driven by the community, players have raised over $600,000 to rebuild stables for legends like Meisho Doto, while funding ongoing care and food for retired icons like Haru Urara and Nice Nature.
Developer Support: Cygames regularly directs official proceeds back to the Retired Horse Association of Japan.
It’s rare for a game to be this fun while genuinely changing the real world for the better. Download it immediately
