Concerns About Privacy

A couple days ago I got a text message telling me that a classmate had complimented me on Valid. I have never once downloaded this app so I was rightfully confused, I finally downloaded the app to investigate and I found out that the app gains full access to any users contacts list so even if you never signed up for the app, the app can gain your phone number possibly your location, etc. through another person. I think that this is a major breach of privacy because I never once signed up for this app or ever gave them permission to have my phone number or such information. I also don’t like that my name is being thrown around in different polls that I didn’t approve of and aren’t aware of. Because I never download the app! I think the structure of the app is absolutely an invasion of privacy and unacceptable. I do not think that they should have full access to your contact list and be able to send you messages or have your name be in an app when you never even signed up for it. In theory the app seems nice but I think they need major changes. (I’ve already sent an email.)

Response from developer

Hi Muna! We responded to your query over email. Please see our privacy policy for how Valid accesses and uses contacts. We do not store your location for any purpose. We do not buy or sell data. Contacts access is also optional and not needed for the core flow of the app.

Amazing

It’s amazing highly recommended

Can you make valid more like Snapchat???

It would me way more interesting for people who don’t have Snapchat to be able to have an app like Snapchat

‼️Warning‼️ Please read this

If Im stopping anyone from downloading this, I did something right. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS APP. By downloading this and sharing your contacts, they automatically get added too. I received a text message from this app because somehow they knew my phone number, name, and school. This app is not okay and should NOT be on the app store due to how dangerous it is. Please, do not download/share this app you are screwing yourself and everyone else over. This is not okay and I hope it gets removed soon. The developers are probably going to try and deny any wrongdoing—DONT fall for it. protect yourself. value your own safety. You can't trust this app.

Response from developer

We take privacy and safety concerns seriously and want to clarify how Valid works. Valid does not automatically create accounts for people in a user’s contacts. When a user chooses to share contacts with Valid, those contacts may be used to help them find people they know and participate in polls. If they choose to invite someone, that invitation is initiated by the user. If someone who hasn’t joined Valid receives an invitation text, it does not mean an account was created for them. The invitation was initiated by someone they know who chose to send it. We understand that receiving an invitation when you haven’t joined can be surprising. We provide options to opt out of texts, request removal of your information, and be excluded from voting. More information about how Valid handles contacts, privacy, and safety is available in our Privacy Policy and Parent FAQ at validapp.lol. Anyone with a privacy or safety concern can also contact us directly so we can investigate their specific situation.
