Great News Summary

The app is easy to navigate and I appreciate that the news is quickly summed up and provides scholarly sources so that I know it’s all fact-checked news!

Please fix swipe to go back

Really like this app, but please bring back the ability to swipe back from and article to the main feed. Now, whenever I read an article I am taken back to the top of the feed, even if I was previously somewhere down the bottom of the feed.

Crashes

Can’t honestly give a review because the app keeps crashing. Deleted it and reinstalled it numerous times. Same issue each time.10.4 iPad with 256mb

Now with Full screen video ads that keep re-opening??

I’ve been a big fan of this since I heard Max talking about it on a physics podcast. It is my only news app. I love its controllability, and neutral nature. I’m a huge fan of Max Tegmark. However, as of fairly recently the “full screen” pop-up video ads are making it very hard to stick with! The problem is the ads continue to come back (full screen) after you close them and scroll. It’s practically impossible to read articles due to this. I know it’s free and I’ve always been willing to deal with ads due to that, but you close these full screen pop-up video ads and they come right back after another “scroll” I first noticed it with “Daily wire” so, I removed Daily Wire from preferences” (which is a great ability to have!) But, it seems most the other news sites are having the same full screen, re-occurring video ads as well. This is the first time in my life I’ve felt bad about giving a “low star review” because I believe in Max Tegmark and this endeavor. However, it has been frustrating. The developer response has been fantastic for this app so, I give 2 stars just so this gets read. I will change it right back to 5 if I learn that this must be a problem with my phone or otherwise remedied.

Shows the dark and the light side of the news

Great way to figure out what’s going on in the world without all the fluff and bias of the right wing media.

Very good for getting the news

This app will s amazing if you want to see all sides of a particular story. This app is up there with Ground news and I use both to get the full picture.

Love the idea but font is hard to read

The font used for headlines is difficult to read and I can’t increase the font size in the settings or in the iOS accessibility settings.

Response from developer

Thank you for the feedback. We just pushed a new version today including increasing font sizes and many other UI improvements.

Keeps crashing lately.

I give this 5 stars because I love its controllability, and neutral nature. I’m a huge fan of Max Tegmark.
However, lately it’s been crashing consistently.
Please fix! No update in 2 months now.

No notifications

Where are the push notifications? There are none or they don't seem to work

Good idea, but mostly opinion pieces not news

The general app concept is good, but it’s held back by having too many opinion pieces mixed with the real news and by not having a feature to allow you to include or exclude specific topics based on your interests.

Response from developer

Thank you for the suggestions. We are taking them into consideration as we are constantly adding new features. We hope you continue to enjoy!

Smartless

Just heard about your app on Smartless! Great app!! I really like the stories and maybe they could live on a separate tab from the comparison story columns so they would be easier to scroll through.

Almost perfect

Would be perfect with:

- ability to enable reader view for an article or load articles with the reader view on;

- option to open articles in built in browser or external one.

Disappointed

I have been finding a lot of value in these news apps that provide an easy way to read narrative from the left and the right on current events and topics. This app has some great potential, but it is showing the exact same article from the exact same source as being left biased and later when I scrolled down as being right biased. I wish I could provide screen shots. The article is definitely written from a left leaning bias. There are better apps that do a great job of truly providing narrative from the left and right without confusing the two.

Hello, thank you for the review and feedback. We have reviewed your report, and are taking steps to make fixes on the bug you mentioned in which stories/sources may be misappropriated.

Great!

I saw Max Tegmark on Lex Fridman and respect the work both are doing. When they mentioned this, I had to download it. Awesome!

Favorite news aggregator 👍

I've only recently discovered this app and it's already risen to the top of my news app collection. I've found that, being asked to consciously choose whether I want to read articles that care about being factual or not so much, that lean left or right, that skim quickly over a topic or take a deeper look, has made me more mindful of the information I'm allowing to influence me and led to better choices, which has in turn made reading the news much more enjoyable. I've kept the sliders in the middle when it comes to political perspective, because after each full article is a selection of stories dealing with the same topic from different venues and I like to see what all sides are thinking. I believe the problems people adopting the extremes of the political spectrum are having with this app is that they want those extreme ideas but they also want to have the slider all the way over to pure fact to validate them and are disappointed when it doesn't happen.

Not unbiased

It seems even though you’re able to split, conservative, liberal stories there always seems to be a liberal slant. Meaning they show the conservative headlines that could possibly support the liberal side. There are plenty of hardline anti-conservative headlines, but on the right side there aren’t hardline anti-liberal slants.

Hello, thank you for the review and feedback. Usually, for either side of the sliders, there should be supported articles that correctly reflect those ends of the political spectrum. In any case, we have reviewed your report about the sliders and are taking steps to eliminate any observed slider bias.

This is NormaL. Or is it?

So now a days Gossip passes as news.
Here’s the guide folks. I’m responsible for my thoughts my feelings my actions and their consequences. What John dip did or didn’t do is his business. I will look for what happens in tabloids where Gossip is the name of the game.
Second thing with this app is divisiveness so I am either right or left. ? What if I am a rainbow and do not identify with all that divisiveness but with what brings people together.
How about that. How about I want to know about the good news as opposed to what this and that said or did.
Come on. Catch up. The old ways are already dry dead.
Hugs

Hello, thank you for the review and feedback. It is our mission to empower people to rise above controversies and understand the world in a nuanced way. Sliders aren't designed to label the user, but are just a tool to allow users to see the context of stories across the political spectrum. On another note, we are working on including options for positive news like you mentioned :) Thanks again for the feedback!

Great Tool for Neutral Perspective

By showing all facets of a news story in how it’s reported, you get a sense for what bias has been incorporated into each article.

The difference in-between the bias is often as close as you can hope to be to an accurate idea of what’s really happening.

Love the website, App never works

Improve the News is a fantastic service. It really has positively changed how I read the news. I love the website and the news feed in the app works fine. Unfortunately I’m unable to open and read articles in the app. It just spins and never opens.

Hello, thank you for your review and feedback. We are thrilled to see that you’re enjoying Improve the News! Articles linked as sources for our stories should open in an internet browser app. The issues you're facing when clicking on articles are likely coming from permissions and paywalls that those sources/articles, which we don't have any control over. Our articles however should load properly. If they're not, we can troubleshoot those issues if you wouldn't mind providing feedback on our feedback form with specifics: https://www.improvethenews.org/feedback We hope you continue to enjoy the app!
