A wonderful app for organizing complex projects!

I absolutely love this app. Apart from some noncommittal dabbling in Freeform, I’m new to the infinite canvas approach to organizing and brainstorming projects, and I am so glad VisualOS was my first real introduction to the concept. My chaotic handwritten notes, sketches, url links, and pdfs are now mapped out and organized by folders. This app ticks all the right boxes (no subscriptions, no data mining, no annoying popups interfering with my workflow), and the version updates just keep improving on perfection. :-) Great job, guys!

Ótimo App

O aplicativo é ótimo. Tudo funciona perfeitamente e a sincronização por pastas no iCloud facilita tudo!

Thank you 🙏🏼

Love the Privacy

I love that it stores locally on your device yet you can still sync to devices (if you wish) through your selected cloud storage (such as iCloud). It’s intuitive and the developers seem to be on top of updates and feature requests.

한글이 잘 써지지 않아요

제가 원하던 어플이라 잘 사용하길 원하는데 한글이 자꾸 깨져서 나옵니다.

Thank you. Can you please explain further what exactly is not working in Korean? We will try to fix it within one of the next updates. Edit: It should be fixed now with today's update 1.5.1. Can you confirm this?

A good start.

Milanote will be the obvious comparison, but I think visualOS’s philosophy is different enough that they seem to exist for similar but different wants. It still lacks some of the polish and elegance of something like Milanote but already ticks several of the boxes. Most importantly, for me, its projects work locally or sync via the user’s preferred cloud.

A wishlist:
* Please add columns. This is a very useful tool in Milanote. Being able to add columns, color coding and nested “cards” or assets is a powerful and useful tool for organizing complex design projects.
* Please provide the ability to add captions under elements like images. Using notes in place of captions feels like a missing feature.
* There seems to be no straightforward way to format text on IPad other than italicized and bold. Neither Text nor Notes offer options to resize text alongside images.
*A “pinch to resize” feature would be incredible too; for quickly resizing images.
* While the functionality of visualOS’s folders serve a similar purpose and is preferred since it’s mirrored as actual folders on the hard drive, please allow options for how its icon is displayed in the UI. Folders make even the best put together canvas look like a desktop. The folder icon is less aesthetically clean compared to alternatives.
* Swatches or “Colors”. Addable swatches are important for pitch decks and mood boards. Right now, the user has to use workarounds but this is essential for an app like this.
*Workspace management seems clunky at the moment. Trying to delete a folder outside the app doesn’t appear to delete the related visualOS folders nor contents, and retains the connected assets even after deleted on iPad. Deleting from within the software itself seems to work marginally better. I may just be missing something but imagine getting hung up on trying to delete your feature test files and content instead of creatively using the app.
*Allow the ability to incrementally nudge an object’s placement on the canvas with keyboard input or on macOS.
•Add option for user presets—sizes, colors, shapes—for things like shapes, arrows, folders, text, etc. Being able to easily reproducer or duplicate commonly used things improves workflows tremendously.
* Selecting things with touch, even something as simple as selecting a photo to reposition it, goes totally against muscle memory. I consistently overshoot or understood finger taps. Using the Pencil is fine, and it should work similarly without. Mouse modes sort of works for that but introduces its own odd behaviors. A single finger tap and hold to drag things across screen should be an option.

Update: Unfortunately, after my initial positive review, I opened visualOS on my iPad only to discover a single “Recovered” folder and all of the work I had done over the last few hours undone, and randomly distributed onto the canvas. This was accompanied by several folders I had created previously now in a floating menu that says “New Items”. The folders just float about and won’t allow me to place them because a prompt says they “Already belong to a canvas” which is cryptic and not very useful. The folders seem to be trapped in this side panel and cannot be placed anywhere nor deleted. This was enough to convince me that maybe the app isn’t ready for real world use, yet. And unfortunately, if I’m honest, I’d have to remove a star because it affected my trust in its stability. This will have to become a bit more robust before I can trust it on actual projects.

Thank you for your review and taking the time to test visualOS! Please update to our newest version. We have implemented many of your ideas and made the sync more robust. But please keep in mind, visualOS is intended to be used from inside visualOS. You can drag files into the linked folder, or edit a photo with photoshop and we catch up, but it's simply not built for the file manipulation directly in the finder! If you want to rename or delete a folder or move items, please do it inside visualOS. Sorry if that wasn't clear from the beginning. You can see the linked folder as a mirror of the internal state of the app, which is the state of truth. If you have more ideas, please post them to our public roadmap: https://visualos.featurebase.app/roadmap

Great visualization tools

This is an amazing tool! I was trying to find a cheaper option than milanotes and I think visualOS is perfect! It’s also a lot better in some ways. For example I love the search bar tool that can take me anywhere and I also love the grouping feature. I especially enjoy the iCloud sync allowing me having my own copy and it being way cheaper than milanotes. It’s also better than Freeform from iOS. It has sleeker and pretty default designs (in Freeform I have to manually deaign everything) and moving around is lot smoother. It’s the small details that matter! My only concerns is that if I have too many elements it will start to lag like Freeform. On the web version it’s not perfect, there is some of zoom issue I encounter. One of which being sometime zooming in will also cause the whole web to zoom and tool bar disappear. Could be solve by refresh but with infinity canvas, zooming is gonna be done 24/7, so not having this bug will def be a great quality of life. The developers are constantly making improvements, which is always nice to look forward to!

Thanks a million! We have tested it with up to thousands of images and items on the board. On our test devices it did not start to lag, but if it does on your end, please write to us, and we are 100% sure to find a smart solution for this :) For the Zoom on web issue: Thanks for mentioning it! We have found out how to suppress this annoying behavior, and it will be fixed in one of our next updates.

Update 2

This app is fantastic. I use Defter Notes (which is GREAT), and this app is similar; but will have a slight edge with a few more options.

I realize you are new + still building, but please consider font options (ability to use installed fonts) + pen (size and color) options.

Thank you for updating so frequently. Pls keep going!

Wow! Thank you for your review! These are great suggestions, and we have added them to our roadmap: https://visualos.featurebase.app/roadmap If you have something else in mind, please write to us anytime. Edit: Yes, we have already made tests with the pen options. But we want to make sure that it is polished and not rushed. We try to make it a part of the next mayor release, 1.3, but I will not promise anything.

Love as an artist!

It’s really great to get all my ideas out and organized but wish I can put multiple photos on it as it will be way easier and add color swatches for easy ideas

Response from developer

Thank you! Hearing this makes us proud. Yes, you found a bug there with the images. We can reproduce it, and the fix is on the way. We hadn't noticed it ourselves because we usually add multiple photos by dropping them straight into the connected iCloud folder on the device: they then show up in the app ready to place. 😬 That might work as a temporary workaround for you as well. And color swatches for ideas are a great idea. We've added both to our public roadmap (visualos.featurebase.app). If you have more ideas, please write to us anytime! Edit: The "multiple photos add bug" should be fixed in our newest version

Great!

Very, very good start. If possible, would love the following:

1. Options for pens ( different pens, sliding sizes …)
2. Ability to use downloaded, (my) fonts for text

Otherwise, great. Please continue to update.
