Text adventure game I’ve wanted since I was a kid

This basically fulfills my desire for procedural generation, emergent storytelling and text adventure RPGs from when I was a kid. It’s got some rough edges to work on but I’m genuinely impressed

They’ve done it again

Voyage is a true successor to AIDungeon, and yet it’s nothing like it. I’ve been following this game’s development for too long and the amount of updates they made and are still making is INSANE! I never had more fun in a game before, and the way they implement the AI engines here are so complex that it doesn’t feel like AI slop. I’m truly proud of this team

Response from developer

Thanks!! The "doesn't feel like AI slop" line is the best compliment we could get. We ship updates constantly and have a lot more coming your way. Really appreciate you following along since the early days!

Yes,

I like it, it’s a upgrade from Ai dungeon. I haven’t created a world yet. I’ve played others & it’s great very addicting. I find myself burning through my pool quickly. It’s good while it’s still in its infancy

Response from developer

Glad you're having fun with the worlds out there! The pool does go fast once it clicks, which is why multiplayer is free for everyone. Lots of great creator worlds to play if you don't want to build your own yet. Thanks for the support!

I love it

Genuinely has the most helpful AI assistant to ever exist

Response from developer

Love to hear it! The narrator and assistant are the heart of Voyage, so this means a lot. Thanks for being here!

The DM breaks everything on longer games

The longer your game the more it gets muddled up until eventually you’re spending more time trying to argue with the AI DUNGEON MASTER than actually playing. It totally just does what it wants, forgets key information… it eventually feels like herding cats trying to keep the story on track.

Response from developer

Sorry to hear that. Memory issues can be tricky, some adventures can get into a funky state and go off the rails. We'd love to see what went wrong in your adventure. If you want to reach out at support@voyage.io we can look into that with you. If you have a feedback ID from your last action, that would help a ton.

Persistent audio

Even with all audio settings turned off the app continues to run the audio processes which drain battery quickly.

Response from developer

That's not good. I'll make sure to let our developers know so we can look into that. Thanks for reporting. Hope we can get this resolved and earn a 5-star rating from you in the future!

It Keeps Getting Better

I think that it’s a very steep learning curve compared to AI Dungeon. Understanding the complicated and VERY important world building takes a very long time, but the Studio AI is changing that majorly.

My only gripe is that there seems to be tighter censorship in this one that is a bit harder to get around, mainly around topics involving kids, but I hope that is going to get better. Thought policing is annoying.

This app still deserves 5 stars though. It literally immerses you more than any game you will ever play.

Response from developer

Glad you're enjoying it! You're right that world building has a learning curve, it's a bigger leap than AI Dungeon's setup. The Studio AI improvements are exactly where we're focused on making that easier. In the meantime, playing some of our creators' worlds is a great way to skip the setup while you get the hang of it. Thanks for being an early supporter!

Really good

I can lot of potential in there, but there is no free to play option after the demo

Response from developer

Thanks for playing and I'm glad uou can see the potential. You can play an unlimited amount of Voyage multiplayer for free. As costs come down, we hope to expand what we can offer to players on the free tier. Thanks for being such an early supporter!

Way fun

The multiplayer experience is really awesome. Subscription allows unlimited play, which is crazy

Response from developer

Glad to hear you enjoy multiplayer. It's low-key been one of the best parts about Voyage. Thanks for being a supporter!

Definitely Has Potential

I honestly enjoy it laying it quite a lot, this was essentially what I was hoping Ai Dungeon would become. My biggest issue is the usage, which I understand the reasoning at this stage, but it’s not something I have to like. I know there’s supposedly an unlimited version, but I don’t know what features are unlimited. I also don’t want to switch my Ai Dungeon subscription since it’s used for Ai Dungeon and Voyage. I just don’t know if I will still have my perks for Ai Dungeon if I swap to unlimited mode for Voyage.

Usage isn’t too much of a problem due to me not playing Voyage too often. But it still gives me a bit of stress, definitely when even asking the Narrator questions takes up usage. I know there will be changes to better optimize Voyagr’s usage and that it’ll never be on the same level as Ai Dungeon due to Voyage costing a lot more.

Now gameplay wise, I quite enjoy it, although there are some issues that could happen and some features I’d like added. While playing, I notice that the Ai tries to cater towards the player. For example, I entered into a morally grey camp in one scenario and somehow became a specialist to the boss. I’d also like to add that I was a wanted man and I was preparing myself to have to fight someone that might want my bounty, but I just went through the camp with ease. This wasn’t the only time something like this happened. In another scenario, I went to a highly secure superhero headquarters and was just allowed in there with no kind of identification. When I’m playing, I want a challenge and not to have everything spoon fed to me. I’m sure part of this could be due to the person creating the world and not solely the Ai’s fault, but stuff like this makes it a bit hard to enjoy the game. I’ve only been playing for around a month so I can’t really say much about how good the memory and other parts are, but I do like what I’m seeing for the most part.

Last thing I can think of would be creating a world. I’ve tried it and it seems to involve a lot of coding. I’ve done Cybersecurity for years and a bit of robotics, so I’m sure I could get it to work. I was hoping for something similar to the Story Cards from Ai Dungeon, not having to code in characters and other things for my world.I don’t know if the Creator Studio would be a better and easier tool, but I’m planning on trying it out and figure out how it works.

That’s about all I can think of right now, but like I said in the title, this game has potential. I think the only way you could get a completely limitless and true RPG would be with Ai. I believe this is the first of its kind and shows what could be achieved. Something like this is what I’ve dreamed about since I first played Ai Dungeon more than 3 years ago. This app could be the start of creating the ultimate RPG.

Thanks for the review, the feedback, and for trying things out. First, let me see if I can answer your questions about the Voyage Unlimited plans. Voyage Unlimited lets you take unlimited actions using our standard story model. You also get a Premium Usage budget for extra AI features like Voice, Creator Studio, and more powerful story models. This also includes asking the narrator. Our goal with the Unlimited plans is that you don't need to ever worry about running out of actions. Voyage Unlimited ALSO includes full access to the same AI Dungeon benefits you have on that subscription tier (the exception being that it does not include monthly credits). If you like Voyage, the Voyage Unlimited plans are a much better fit for what you want to do. Hopefully, that clears things up on the plans. It also sounds like you had a few issues with story state-related things. You're right that it's difficult to know for sure if it's the Voyage engine or something the creator did when setting up the World. Whenever you have issues like that, if you submit feedback or email us at support@voyage.io with your feedback ID, we would be more than happy to look into it and see if we can get things resolved. We hope to be able to earn a 5-star rating from you in the future! Thanks for your support!

Great while it lasts. Far from “Limitless”.

It’s pretty sweet in every way except once you run out of usage, that’s it. You can’t play anymore until you start paying a minimum of $15 a month for it. Then you have a limited amount of turns you can take until you have to wait for the five hour timer to reset. Then, if you take too many turns even after you’ve waited for each five hour limit to reset, you will be cut off until the WEEKLY timer resets. I understand it’s for managing costs, but these restrictions completely pull you out of any momentum or investment your story may have going when you may have to wait DAYS before you’re permitted to keep playing.

Hey! We recently updated it so ALL subscriptions have unlimited voyage play with usage only for turning on premium features. We also removed the 5h limit as well. So now any subscriber will never have to stop playing. Would love to hear if this solves your problems!

Phenomenal. Take my money!

I’ve been a fan of AI Dungeon for more than two years now, and this makes that platform look like a demo or tutorial. I am so excited for this platform to evolve. I will be subscribed asap!

Response from developer

Thanks for being an AI Dungeon supporter and now a Voyage player. Our community is what made all of this possible, so thank you for your support!

Not ready yet or a far cry from what was originally advertised

After following Ai Dungeon and its development for years, I was more than excited to see Voyage release. When i got into the closed beta I was so excited but everything was so flat and boring, with every character feeling generic, and the same regardless of what you do and with the game rewriting what you input constantly the experience was unrewarding. Moving into this public, open beta release I decided to try again, the worlds and their issues are still just as apparent, every character you encounter is flat and two dimensional, they have no heart or soul, and their dialogue is impossibly generic. The abilities are inconsistent and they make your character feel weak since they don’t work. If you run out of ‘useage’ these issues are made more apparent because you can’t ask assistant or studio for help so if thry mess up and you want to keep going you are forced to play as the ai actively forgets what you put and doesn’t have your abilities proc or act consistently. It’s really disheartening to see years of hype lead up to this.. I’ll be sticking to ai dungeon over voyage until some major changes happen.

Hey! We recently made it so all subscriptions have unlimited play (if you transition to unlimited plans) so you never are stopped from playing due to not having usage. This also extends to the assistant which you can use without taking up usage as well. For characters feeling flat or boring I"m curious what world you played in? The feeling of the characters depends A LOT on the creator and the world. I would recommend playing some of Kato's worlds like Far Too Tempting which many players have raved about the characters on.

One of the greats

I have been playing AI Dungeon for years now and I have to say Voyage is one of the best improvements on a concept I have ever seen. I love it!

Response from developer

Thanks! This truly is the AI RPG we've always wanted. We are so glad it's finally here, and, more importantly, that you enjoy it. Thank you for the support!!

Cool new RPG

Dynamic RPG with voice over, image generation and creator tools. The narration and story and memory is the best I’ve seen! This is a promising new kind of RPG!

Response from developer

Really glad to hear you had a good experience. Thanks for the support and for being an early user!

I built my own game in minutes

I’ve always wished that I had the technical skills to be able to develop games, RPGs, open-worlds. I’ve seen a lot of cool vibe-coded games out there thanks to innovations with AI, but when you actually play them, they really don’t stand up well. Locations disappear, characters forget things. It’s a fun gimmick, that’s all.

Voyage is really different. The worlds you can create are so vast and immersive. The engine that runs the game underneath has clearly been tested a lot to get to this point because I’ve never met NPCs in any game with such good memory or consistent voices.

Most exciting of all imo is how I could create a game I always dreamed of from a simple prompt and conversation with Voyage Studio. It does really feel like the future of gaming.

Highly playing & creating your own world!!!
