Best app ever

Easy to use and wonderful navigation. I love WLRN!

It’s gone from bad to worse.

I have the same problem the person who titled his review Nagware has. Also, there are pockets of places in my neighborhood where it cuts out, but when I return to that same area, it’s fine. This happens 100% of the time. currently, I’m listening to the app to see if the buzz in my radio is from the station or my radio and sure enough, I’m hearing the buzz in my app. So you guys have a lot to work on. I was all set to go out and buy a new radio. The one I have now is 47 years old and has been perfect until now.

Still some work to be done

It appears that the App was released a bit too early without doing some tests. For example, it takes a while to load up, the advertisements (which is acceptable) come on in the middle of the segment and that’s annoying.

I just want to listen

I access the app just to listen to programs on local station when I am walking. Reading on device is burdensome for me. I have other means for doing that.

Nagware

Every time it loads, the feed pauses or switch signals, the initial advertisement plays, again and again, and again, interrupting whatever I’m listening to. Between annoying and irritating. Despite this, it is my preferred method to listen to WLRN in the go. The previous version used to double stream on occasion. New version appears to have corrected that, thankfully. Great programming keeps me listening.

Not awful, but not very good

I used the old app almost daily. One push, I was listening to my local NPR station. Now, I select the app and I’m besieged by thumbnails that lead to nothing I want to use. Please understand that I have the NPR app. I have Sirius. I have podcasts. I have Applenews, which streams news stories, also. So, all these things are competing for my ears and my $.

I use the WLRN app bc I want mostly to *listen* to streaming news/stories that are local. Why make me sort thru all those thumbnails, esp a whole thumbnail for 15 sec (?) sound clip? It seems like a waste of space on my phone screen. WLRN offers one thing none of the competitors do: local news by many people I know.

Clean up the interface and make it one-click. Or, make it selectable between your classical/News.

I appreciate the drive to innovate. So, I don’t want to be nasty. I just think the app update has room for improvement.

Bad

Old app much simpler

Unfiltered information

When I want to know what’s factually making the rounds in the world, I listen to WLRN -NPR,

Better

More stable. A little slow to load.

Ridiculously bad

A working app should be a top priority. The fact that after 3-4 years this app is still not working properly makes me wonder “what the heck am i paying $15/ mo for?”). Face it, for most people this is how we are consuming news during the day, i dont work at a desk like i did in the old days. And i dont want to carry a 2nd device (an FM radio) like i did in the way back days. This app is constantly crashing. It rarely restarts, if it restarts i have to listen to 45 to 90 seconds of commercials AGAIN (maybe 3 x in 5 min, like last week). At which point i bail on the app. for me this app is important because I value the local programming (weather updates, sunshine economy, the news Roundups.) However, most of the other programming over the years is from the national programs, and I can get it on the NPR & PRX related programs up on Sirius (which i also pay for). Maybe soon the days comes, for the first time since college a million years ago, i stop supporting public radio. sorry not sorry. 😣

Awful!

Wonder where my pledge money goes too! Please revamp it completely for a better experience. Use the one from WFME in Orlando as a model.

promotions and advertising filled wifi to network

Terrible app for a serious listening.
It frequently switches from media to station promotions at the crossroads of wifi and network.
Very frustrating to a serious listening.
Please fix it.

Worst news app in creation

This is absolutely the most frustrating app on my phone. I have been a news junky & npr junky my entire life but since i started using a phone to consume it, about 16 mo a i have said goodbye to WLRN and hello to SXM. My loss of local coverage is sad for me. But this app drops CONSTANTLY. If ur lucky u will get 12-15 min of broadcast. Then it will drop..silence for 10-15 sec; then station ID or sponsor commercial for 15-60+ sec. then a couple more mins of news, and repeat. Drop could be incoming message from your phone or no discernible reason at all. After just 1hr this AM I again want to throw my phone across the street. Do better Friends of WLRN! Where are membership dollars going if not to improve member experience! HELP US HELP U!

Lazy and awful

I don’t even know why they bothered making an app. Every article just jumps you to the browser to read it. The app may as well just be a link to the WLRN website. Truly awful.

Audio Error Occurred

Keep getting this message as of week of 11/16/20. Don’t know if it’s an update that has caused this. Now i listen to NPR News via the NPR App tapping into a FtMyers station instead. I need my local Miami-Dade news! Please fix it!

Please fix or go back to version 1.2

The complete redesign and rebuild has NOT led to a better user experience. The previous version worked. No continuously dropped streams , no connection problems. If it did drop out it would resume almost immediately and play from where it dropped off. A joy to listen to and stay updated with factual news. Now not so much. It is work to use this app for the past 2 months and frustrating because being interrupted this much and missing chunks of what you were listening to, when you are absorbed in the news or another program puts it in the unpleasant experience category. Now seriously thinking about finding another similar streaming source. Too bad as I donate often to WLRN and would of course prefer the continuous , uninterrupted service it was in version 1.2. Please let us know you are working on a timely fix.

Frustrating

I definitely like having the app on my iPhone but it is frustrating. Just as others have noted, if a call or alert comes in, the live stream stops and does not resume automatically. I have the app for WNYC in New York and this doesn’t happen. Maybe you could ask them for some tips.

Audio pauses all the time

Anytime I receive any notification or alert, the live radio audio pauses and doesn’t resume until manually opening the app, hitting PAUSE and then hitting play again. I had better luck using Safari to stream.

Feedback requires donation

Tried to submit feedback on the app, but wad greeted with the message, “failed to submit, no donation,” even though there was no place to donate. And I already donate to the TV side.

Here’s the feedback it wouldn’t accept.

1. You need to add “Streaming over smart device” (e.g., over TuneIn) o the list of how folks listen to the station.
2. Over NPROne, an interrupted stream resumes when the interruption ends. Here, I have to go back into the app and start it up again.
