About

Rake every patch of sand once, in one unbroken path, and finish at the diamond. Zen Garden is a calm puzzle game of 1,080 gardens. Each one is a small grid of sand among moss, stones, trees and water. The rake carves its grooves under your finger as you go. In Japan's dry landscape gardens, kare-sansui, the raker plans a way through and steps out without leaving a footprint in the gravel. That small planning problem is the whole game. It starts simply and grows slowly: larger gardens, more to plan around, and marked sections where the rake must run straight from end to end. Every garden has been checked to have a solution. There is no timer, no score and no lives. Lift your finger whenever you like. Drag back to undo. If you're stuck, ask for a hint, or start the garden again. A living garden • Koi ponds that ripple when you touch them, and koi that drift closer • Pines, junipers, maples, plum and cherry blossom, beds of moss, stones, stone lanterns and bridges, with a season for each garden • Now and then a bird stops by: a white-eye, a wagtail, a kingfisher • Light that follows the sun through your day, from morning sand to lanterns lit at night, or a time of day you choose • An original soundscape that composes itself as you play: wooden tones, soft piano, the breath of a shakuhachi flute and the bell-like drops of a suikinkutsu, the water jar buried beneath a stone basin • Touch a pine, a lantern or the water, and each answers in its own small sound, with gentle haptics. Sound and haptics can each be turned off. A few lines for each garden A finished garden rests for as long as you like, with a few lines chosen for it: haiku and waka by Japan's classic poets, and other short passages long in the public domain. Your gardens Every garden you finish is kept in Your gardens. Open one to see your route again, rake it again on fresh sand, or share a picture of it. The first 54 gardens are free Play the first two chapters for free. One purchase, The Whole Garden, opens all 1,080 gardens, for good. There is no subscription.
