Translator Duo turns your phone into an interpreter for two people. You start talking and the translation appears before you finish the sentence — the other person is already reading. It works with no internet. Speech and text are translated on the device itself, so it holds up on a plane, abroad without a local SIM, and anywhere the signal runs out. What it does • Speech recognition in 59 languages • Translation that keeps pace with your speech • Punctuation added on its own • Dialogue mode: two people take turns, each reads their own half of the screen • Photo translation: snap a menu, a shop sign or a street sign — the translation lands right on top of the text, in its place • Live camera translation: point the camera and the words change as you go • Recognized text can be edited in both halves of the screen • The translation read out loud, automatically if you like • History with search and favorites • Dark theme • No ads How to use it 1. Pick the two languages 2. Tap the bottom microphone for yourself and the top one for the other person 3. Text and translation appear as you speak To use it offline, download the language once — over Wi-Fi, in a few taps. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: Microsoft Translator at 4.8 against Talking Translator's 4.2. Microsoft Translator also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 2) and ratings volume (158K vs 281). Talking Translator's advantage is update cadence (every 2 weeks vs every 6 weeks). On price, review sentiment, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Microsoft Translator holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Microsoft Translator has 158K ratings behind it against 281, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 44% of Microsoft Translator's written reviews are positive against 50% of Talking Translator's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Microsoft Translator ships an update every 6 weeks, Talking Translator every 2 weeks. The most recent releases landed on November 4, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
