Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: Ereader at 5.0 against FBReader's 3.7. Ereader also leads on update cadence (fortnightly vs monthly). FBReader's advantage is ratings volume (128 vs 1) and iOS requirement (13.0 vs 15.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. FBReader sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Ereader sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Ereader holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: FBReader has 128 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

FBReader ships an update monthly, Ereader fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 15, 2026 and October 6, 2026 respectively.
