STEP IN SYNC WITH YOUR HEART. The Counterpace® guidance system is a sensor-based training platform that coordinates rhythmic movement with your heart cycle to enhance aerobic performance, health, recovery & experience. The Counterpace app connects to the Counterpace sensor and guides you to match your heart rate to your step rate, while ensuring that each step is precisely timed to the relaxation phase of your heart’s pump cycle. Simply step to the audible prompts to optimize blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout your body. Based on the science of cardiac counterpulsation, the Counterpace system guides you to align each step with your body's natural cardiac rhythm so you can exercise longer and faster with less effort and greater efficiency. • Treadmill Walking & Running - Counterpace is easiest to use on a treadmill, where you can control speed & incline to fine tune your heart and step rate. • Outdoors - improves your running, walking, or hiking experience, from the track to the trails, whenever your natural heart rate during each activity approximates your natural step rate. Accessories, such as walking poles, or ankle or hand weights increase blood flow, calorie burn, and help you raise your heart rate towards your natural step rate. • Elliptical Training - Adjust resistance to ensure you're at a comfortable step rate. Counterpace guidance also works on "paddle based" stair stepping machines. • Metronome Training - Learn to run at your optimal step rate. Metronome training can teach you to step precisely to a beat at a variety of target stride frequencies. The Counterpace sensor is required for use of the Counterpace app. The sensor is available for purchase only at www.counterpace.com. Treadmill desk users have different needs than treadmill users. Treadspan was built for the walking pad use case. Someone that wants to track their steps throughout the day without being a slave to an app to log each session. This app coupled with a $17 chip, you can buy off Amazon - your treadmill sessions will be automatically stored in memory and ready for sync whenever you choose—no need to log each session individually. This means you can focus on your work instead of logging each workout. Treadspan also provides detailed step metrics, distinguishing between treadmill activity and other sources, and syncs directly with Apple Health to keep your fitness data organized. Supports most treadmills that have app capabilities. Take control of your treadmill tracking with Treadspan—sync when you want, not after every session! Treadspan is open source and full source code is available on Github. The hope is this project will gain traction and other people will add firmware for other treadmills overtime.

Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: TreadSpan at none against Counterpace's shown. TreadSpan also leads on update cadence (monthly vs every 2 months) and monetization model (free vs ad-supported). Counterpace's advantage is ratings volume (10 vs 1) and device support (4 vs 2). On price, rating, review sentiment and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.9 for Counterpace against 5.0 for TreadSpan. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Counterpace has 10 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews split almost evenly too, at 100% and 100% positive.
Counterpace ships an update every 2 months, TreadSpan monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 2, 2026 and September 29, 2026 respectively.
