His last version, Brushes 3 was released in 2012, but was removed from the App Store in 2015. I took over development to modernise and support an app that has continued to be enjoyed by so many artists.

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Brushes at none against FocalPaint's 3. Brushes also leads on rating (4.6 vs 4.2) and ratings volume (179 vs 13). FocalPaint's advantage is review sentiment (79% vs 57%). On update cadence, ads, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.

Brushes costs $3.99 and FocalPaint $4.99 up front. FocalPaint sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Brushes asks for nothing beyond the download.
Brushes holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Brushes has 179 ratings behind it against 13, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 57% of Brushes's written reviews are positive against 79% of FocalPaint's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Brushes ships an update every 6 weeks, FocalPaint monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 29, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
