Many children, adolescents, and adults struggle to eliminate speech errors affecting the American English 'r' sound. Research suggests that these errors can in some cases be eliminated through biofeedback, where learners view a dynamic visual image of their speech and attempt to match a target representing correct production. staRt ("Speech Therapist's App for /r/ Treatment") aims to make biofeedback treatment for /r/ widely accessible to practicing speech-language pathologists. Features: - Tutorial explaining how to interpret and use the biofeedback display - "Free play" mode where users match their real-time visual-acoustic display to a target representing correct production of ‘r’ - "Quest" mode presenting syllables/words for 'r' practice; complexity increases or decreases in an adaptive fashion based on recent performance - "Quiz" mode for use in measuring baseline performance and tracking progress - Visual rewards reinforcing improvements in performance - Clinician dashboard tracking progress over the course of treatment

Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Beginning With Babble at 4.5 against BITS Lab's 3.9. Beginning With Babble also leads on ratings volume (342 vs 16). BITS Lab's advantage is review sentiment (67% vs 39%) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 6 months). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Beginning With Babble holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 3.9. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Beginning With Babble has 342 ratings behind it against 16, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 39% of Beginning With Babble's written reviews are positive against 67% of BITS Lab's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Beginning With Babble ships an update every 6 months, BITS Lab every 2 months. Both last shipped on November 2, 2026.
