Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Reading Diary at 5.0 against Bookcase!'s 3.5. Reading Diary also leads on review sentiment (80% vs 48%) and update cadence (every 3 months vs every 24 months). Bookcase!'s advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 1) and ratings volume (35 vs 1). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Reading Diary sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Bookcase! asks for nothing beyond the download.
Reading Diary holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Bookcase! has 35 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 48% of Bookcase!'s written reviews are positive against 80% of Reading Diary's.
Bookcase! ships an update every 24 months, Reading Diary every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 15, 2026 and October 13, 2026 respectively.
