Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Sentinel Shield dVPN at 5.0 against Shadowscale's 4.5. Shadowscale's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 3) and update cadence (every 5 weeks vs every 7 months). On price, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Sentinel Shield dVPN sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Shadowscale asks for nothing beyond the download.
Sentinel Shield dVPN holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Shadowscale has 20 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 71% of Shadowscale's written reviews are positive against 57% of Sentinel Shield dVPN's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Shadowscale ships an update every 5 weeks, Sentinel Shield dVPN every 7 months. The most recent releases landed on October 14, 2026 and October 8, 2026 respectively.
