Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: CounterUps at 4.9 against Lean's 4.3. CounterUps also leads on update cadence (weekly vs monthly). Lean's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and review sentiment (89% vs 55%). On price, ratings volume, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Lean sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and CounterUps sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
CounterUps holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.3. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 65 and 31 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 89% of Lean's written reviews are positive against 55% of CounterUps's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Lean ships an update monthly, CounterUps weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 13, 2026 and October 18, 2026 respectively.
