Verdict
The clearest difference is monetization model: SimpleBackgrounds at free against Quote Spark's free with in-app purchases. SimpleBackgrounds also leads on ratings volume (10 vs 1). Quote Spark's advantage is update cadence (weekly vs every 4 weeks) and iOS requirement (11.1 vs 18.6). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. SimpleBackgrounds sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Quote Spark sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 5.0 for SimpleBackgrounds against 5.0 for Quote Spark. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: SimpleBackgrounds has 10 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.
SimpleBackgrounds ships an update every 4 weeks, Quote Spark weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 8, 2026 and October 14, 2026 respectively.
