Ride Martha's Vineyard the easy way. MV Bike Paths turns the island's bike paths into nine color-coded lines, A through I, so you can see at a glance where you're on a separated bike path and where you share the road with cars. Version 2 is a whole new app, rebuilt from the ground up for families, first-timers and anyone who just got off the boat with a rental bike. PLAN BY THE TIME YOU HAVE Tell the app where you're starting (Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown or Up-Island) and how long you've got. It leads with the rides that fit, from a 3-mile spin along East Chop to the 7-mile path between Edgartown and Vineyard Haven. RIDE WITH GUIDANCE Follow your line with clear guidance and voice alerts before the path meets a road. If you drift off your line, you'll get a heads-up. On iPhone, guidance keeps going with the screen locked. MAKE THE BOAT Catching a ferry out of Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs? Set your boat time and the app picks rides that get you back with time to board. On the ride, it tells you if you're on pace, or if it's time to take the bus. SEE THE PATH AHEAD IN AR Hold up your phone and see your line drawn on the road ahead through the camera. AR pauses while you're moving, so look around when you pull over. FIND WHAT'S NEARBY Beaches, food and ice cream, restrooms, water and bike help, each with how far it is off your line. LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER Report sand, glass or other trouble on the path to warn the riders behind you. CHECK CONDITIONS Wind and sunset at a glance before you head out, plus a reminder to turn your lights on. COLLECT THE ISLAND PASSPORT Finish a line to earn its stamp. Ride all nine to see the whole island, from West Chop to Chappy. WORKS WHEN SIGNAL DROPS Route lines, ride guidance and voice alerts are stored on your phone, so they keep working in the State Forest or Up-Island when your bars disappear. THE NINE LINES A West Chop Loop B Vineyard Haven to Oak Bluffs (East Chop) C Oak Bluffs to Edgartown (Beach Road) D Edgartown to Vineyard Haven E Edgartown to South Beach (Katama) F Manuel F. Correllus State Forest Loops G Up-Island Routes to Aquinnah H West Tisbury to Vineyard Haven (Lambert's Cove) I Chappy Ride to Wasque Free to use. Plan your ride before your trip at mvbikepaths.com. MV Bike Paths is an independent guide and is not affiliated with any town or state agency. Conditions change, so always ride with care, follow posted signs and obey traffic laws.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Martha's Vineyard Bike Paths holds the better App Store score, 3.7 against 3.3. Written reviews complicate that: 52% of Backroads's written reviews are positive against 0% of Martha's Vineyard Bike Paths's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
