Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: alphaXiv at 100% against Read arXiv's 50%. alphaXiv also leads on rating (4.7 vs 3.3) and ratings volume (17 vs 3). Read arXiv's advantage is iOS requirement (13.0 vs 17.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
alphaXiv holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: alphaXiv has 17 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 50% of Read arXiv's written reviews are positive against 100% of alphaXiv's.
