Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: EteSync Notes at 100% against Proton Calendar's 41%. EteSync Notes also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 2) and update cadence (weekly vs every 5 weeks). Proton Calendar's advantage is rating (4.1 vs 3.0) and ratings volume (1.6K vs 2). On price, ads, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Proton Calendar sells 2 one-off in-app purchases. EteSync Notes asks for nothing beyond the download.
Proton Calendar holds the better App Store score, 4.1 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Proton Calendar has 1.6K ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 41% of Proton Calendar's written reviews are positive against 100% of EteSync Notes's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Proton Calendar ships an update every 5 weeks, EteSync Notes weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 25, 2026 and September 26, 2026 respectively.
